The day's events had been a whirlwind of emotions after arriving in the train after the reaping. From their initial meeting with the tributes, getting to know them briefly, to talking about their skills and qualities, to begin to craft a persona for the Capitol citizens to be interested in them.
Currently, as the train sped along the tracks, carrying Finnick and Tomas towards the Capitol, an uneasy silence hung between them.
Finnick was sitting in the couch, with Tomás just staring at him. Finnick gulped, unsure of what to say to Tomás.
He knew exactly why his mentor had dramatically changed his demeanour the moment the tributes went to the kitchen to have dinner. It wasn't difficult to figure out. He wanted to talk to Finnick about Azalea, his daughter.
"I-" Finnick began, trying to find the words to talk to Tomás, but nothing coming out. Tomás was quick to respond to him, his gaze never leaving him.
"How could you both be so stupid? How could you be so stupid?" Tomás finally burst out, his voice laced with anger. Finnick was taken aback. He expected to be scolded by Tomás about the situation, but not to be blatantly angry about it.
"What are you talking about?" Finnick asked, his voice low.
"I love my daughter. And I have fought hard to shield her from the realities this world brings. I understand why she wouldn't see a problem with this, whatever you two are. But you? I expected more from you Finnick. I figured you would understand."
"She's the most amazing person I've ever met." Finnick defended, in all honesty. Tomás looked at the boy as he sighed in frustration. He was love struck, of course he hadn't thought anything through.
"You think I don't know what it is to be a teenager and in love? That is not the point. You're a bright kid, think a little. What do you think will happen once Snow realises you have a girlfriend?" Tomás asked, his voice softening.
"It would be a shame for you to be taken away from their fantasy by a girlfriend. Don't you think?"
The voice of president snow rang in the back of Finnick's mind sending a shiver down his spine. He had been careful, the only places they'd express their relationship was within the three places the pair would commonly roam around in district 4, and there were never any peacekeepers around.
"But he won't find out. Azalea is in district 4. No one from the Capitol will ever know a thing. I'm careful." Finnick defended, thinking his plan was perfection.
Tomás laughed, "You don't think peacekeepers ever return to the Capitol, share things they've seen in the districts? You don't think Snow doesn't have eyes an ears everywhere, controlling everything we do?"
Finnick looked to the side, realising then that he hadn't fully grasped the implications of his actions. Now, with Tomás's words echoing in his mind, he realised the depth of the responsibility he had taken on.
