Follow Me

I looked into the wolf's eyes, and he looked into mine, and I had a startling realization: the wolf was just as human as I was! But how? People don't turn into wolves!

... people don't turn into cats either.

He looked at me again and then jerked his nose to left. I followed him with my eyes but I couldn't tell what he was gesturing at. Then he started walking that direction, then stopped and looked back at me expectantly, and I understood that he meant for me to follow him.

"Just because he's being so calm doesn't mean he doesn't want to eat me after all," I thought, but I followed him anyway. This was the thrill I'd been asking for all day.

The cold cave slanted deeper underground, and the glow I saw earlier slowly started to get brighter. I shivered. The wolf stepped closer to me, beside me, and I felt the warmth radiate off his body. I followed the wolf until the cave was completely lit enough that I would have been able to see well even as a human, and what I saw took my breath away.

The inside of this cave was huge, and there were tunnels leading away in many directions from the center room we were in. This room was extravagant. A chandelier hung from the ceiling with tapers tiered like a wedding cake and suncatchers in teardrop shapes dripping from the bottom. There were electric lights rigged up too that lit up the rest of the room, and my cat ears could hear the thrum of a generator somewhere within the cave. Velvets and intricate wallpapers (or was that paint) draped over the sides of the room despite it having no windows. The entire place was painted in maroons and purples with accents of shining gold.

Against one edge of the room was a dark, imposing vanity with bowls full of glittering jewelry on top of it. Strings of pearls, diamond pendants, opal rings, and more overflowed from these bowls. Just as sparkly were the reflections as the actual jewels.

The wolf disappeared behind one of the velvet curtains, presumably to go into one of the other rooms in this giant cave. I waited for him to come back for a few minutes, and when he didn't, I leaped on top of the dresser.

I was about to bat at some of the jewelry with my paw when a teen boy emerged from behind the same curtain the wolf had left and picked me right up!
