"P'Tha."
A boy's voice echoed through the chaotic scene of theEmergency Department. "P'Tha!"
A girl, pale face lying on the hospital bed in front of the boy.
The boy tried to climb onto the bed and hugged his sister. He wanted hissister to wake up and tell him a story. He wants to play with his sistermillions of toys. He wanted to play with his sister in the yard and take himswimming.
The boy couldn't understand why she didn't wake up and talk to him.
The father carried the boy out of the hospital bed. His voice choked. Theboy could feel this but couldn't understand why things were the way theywere.
"P'Tha... won't wake up again." The boy's father dropped to his kneesand hugged him tightly. The boy blinked uncomprehendingly.
"Why didn't P'Tha get up again?"
"Because P'Tha... has gone to heaven." The boy could feel his father'strembling body. Why is your father crying like that?
"From now on, it's just Dad, Mom and Tin, just the three of us."
-----------------------------------------
I woke up from the dream as soon as the father and son finished talking. Islowly straightened up, feeling my body stiff and dizzy as if I wanted tovomit. I massaged my eyebrows. This is not the first time I have had thisdream. It was an incident when I was young. At that time, I didn't evenrealize what death was. I saw my sister's lifeless body. She died of sepsis. My sister contracted sepsis while having an abortion at the clinic herselfwithout telling her parents. A day later she had a high fever and wasadmitted to the Emergency Department for low blood pressure. And thenmy sister didn't make it. If I had been a doctor then, I could have saved herlife. I'll do my best to find a cure for the infection in my parents' blood andmy sister might not have passed away.
If I could go back in time with my current medical knowledge, maybe Iwould have a chance to bring her back to life...
The room door was opened. I turned my gaze to the person who wascoming in noisily. It was N'Aim again, a nurse from the EmergencyDepartment with a worried and tired face.
"The doctor is here. It looks like war is about to come out there. Canyou go out and help us, Dr. Tihn?" Aim urged me.
"The doctor has been gone for so long, why is there still so much foodleft Star?"
I turned to look at the barely moving food on the table. I raised myeyebrows, nervously looking at N'Aim.
" What time is it?" I asked and N'Aim raised her hand, looking at herwatch.
"9:50 pm."
I immediately jumped up causing N'Aim to panic. OK, I'm back to this timeperiod again. But this time N'Aim didn't wake me but I woke myself up. Iwas able to wake up on my own.
I don't know if this is real or a dream. But I definitely have to get out of thiswhirlpool. How do I get out of here? I will have to quickly find the answerto this question.
I quickly walked out of the break room, ignoring N'Aim's call.
I know I dropped my stethoscope on the floor. But I decided to dosomething different this time. Even a small action can change the wholeworldsubmit.
I entered the chaotic scene. N'Wan will turn towards me. I will try not tolook and not help him anymore. If he can't find me, he will ask Ai'Gap orN'Pin. I quickly turned around to avoid him and hid behind a curtain of theward, in which a nurse catheterized a patient. The middle-aged nurse lookedat me with an annoyed face. Then the male patient who was about to becatheterized also looked up at me.
"Ah, hi... T...catheterization will be a little painful." I grinned at thebewildered patient blinking at me. I slowly opened the curtain and peekedoutside. N'Wan is standing talking to N'Pin. N'Pin then quickly took thestethoscope and examined the patient's lungs. Everything's fine. Theincident has passed. Pin will be the one to intubate the asthmatic uncle.Let's see if there's anything else I can change.
I left the curtain and went straight to the front door of the EmergencyDepartment. I walked outside to the waiting area of the patient's family. Istood and looked over the dark street in front of the building. Soon, therewill be a case is brought. It was the student who had the accident. He wasunconscious and was found to have a cardiac arrest during the emergencyroom.
The sound of an ambulance siren echoed in my ears. I reviewed what wasdone with this patient. Did I miss something? There's something I forgot toadjust. The alarm sounds more intense. I counted silently in my heart.Patient was admitted to the Emergency Department at 10:05pm.
------------------------------------------
Hmm!
I was extremely angry, punching hard on the table. N'Wan, N'Pin andAi'Gap looked at me in surprise.
"What's the problem, big brother? Don't be hot, don't be hot. You stillhave Gap's by my side." Gap came and sat next to me and hugged myshoulder blades.N'Pin's mouth twitched like she saw the horrible image.
"Damn it, where did it go wrong? I tried my best." I reached out myhand, and took Gap's head off my shoulder. Gap chuckled.
"The case of that young man right? I don't have time to look at thewhole emergency case. But why are you so stressed? You and the othersare already doing your best" Gap made a face like understandingsomething. "Ah, I know. Aren't you nervous about having to do ahearing on a deceased patient in the Emergency Department with aprofessor?
"Are not." I rubbed my forehead. "If it's a fatal case, you can't goanywhere."
"What do you mean, boss?" Gap looked at me confused and then stoodup. "Big Brother should go home and rest. This is not a topic to talkabout. Gap will come back later.
"I'm coming too," Pin said. "See you later." "Yeah." Iremained seated while everyone left the room. Damn... I still can't changethe patient's fate. In this case, I might have to try another option.
I got up and carried my sleepiness and heavy head straight to my room (ofthe hospital resident). I bought two bottles of M-150 energy drink and keptit in the fridge. If I didn't have this trouble, it should still be there.
In this small bedroom, there are 2 double beds, a fridge and a counter with amicrowave and food like cup noodles and candy. I opened the fridge, took abottle of M-150 and opened it lid. I keep a whole bottle of soft drink like juice (jaggery) that containscaffeine. I don't know if that's enough to keep me awake until morning.Maybe if I don't sleep until morning, I can break out of this vicious cycle.
I sat on my own in the bed that I used to lie on when I had to stay in thehospital on duty. This crazy drink didn't wake me up at all. Slapping myselfin the face, I took a deep breath. Eyelids as heavy as lead.
I want to change this again. Three times, I fell asleep and woke up threetimes in the break room. Maybe if I sleep here, I can get out of this loop. That room may have something of a mystery, I'll have to find the answer. Idecided to grab a piece of paper from the bedside table, fold it, and put it inmy pocket. If my time moves to the future, this paper will be in my pocketwhen I wake up, right? But if my time goes back in time, I won't find itI lay down on my bed, closed my eyes, and prayed that when I woke up, Iwould see the sunlight of a new day.
