Early Coffee

I yawned and pushed a strand of hair behind my ear. I pushed my glasses up and continued walking towards the front doors.

The sun was barely peeking over the buildings. Yet, here I was awake and all ready to start the work day. The morning air was cool, with a gentle breeze.

I pulled out my keys and opened the front door to the cafe. I'm glad ms. Wakey trusted me with the keys. She knows just how much I love working here.

I closed the doors behind me, but left them unlocked, and made sure the sign was flipped. It made no difference. It wasn't even 6 yet and people don't start coming in till 6:30. It should give me enough time to prep everything up.

Turning on the lights, I walked into the kitchen and washed my hands in the sink. Behind the counter I put coffee into the machines and got them brewing. I turned the ovens on, knowing we'd be busy since we were right across the street from my High school. Luckily I don't have to go in until 2nd period.

I looked out the windows, admiring the color in the sky. I grabbed a rag and walked over to the booths by the windows. I washed the table again, not caring that they were cleaned last night.

"How could I forget the most important part." I muttered to myself and walked behind the counter. I pulled my apron out of the bottom drawer and unfolded the brown apron. I tied the back and put my little note pad and pen into the front pocket.

Erin Pearson

My name tag read. It was written in a neat and cursive way, completely unlike my handwriting. My letters were anything but neat. They were slanted and smooth.

Ding

I looked up in surprise, not expecting to hear a ding so soon. I checked the time to see it was only 6:18

"Hi!" I smiled at the tall boy that had just come in. I haven't seen him around before, and we mostly have regular customers, despite being in a city. It's usually students from my high school or people on their way to work.

This guy however wore the uniform I had underneath the counter, but I couldn't remember seeing him at school. He had brown hair and light brown eyes. He wore the schools ID around his neck.

"Hi." He smiled at me. He has such a kind smile. He looked down, his eyes lighting up as he looked over the pastries. "Can I get a medium coffee with milk, two sugars, and a slice of that red velvet cake?"

"Yeah, sure." I grabbed a cup and made him the coffee. Handing it to him, I bent down to get a slice of red velvet for him.

"How much?" He asked blowing on his coffee.

"4.75." My eyes widened and I cursed under my breath. "I forgot to ask you if it was to stay or to go, sorry!"

"It's fine, I have time and I don't mind spending it here." His eyes looked into mine, a smile reaching his lips. "Erin right? Or are you borrowing someone's apron?"

I grinned, a chuckle slipping out. "Oh it's Erin alright. What about you?"

"David." He took a sip of the coffee and moaned in bliss. I clenched my hand into a fist and hid my blush. He just moaned out of no where! "You make one heck of a coffee, probably the best one I've ever had."

"Oh yeah, thanks." I fidgeted with the ends of my black short hair. "I haven't seen you around here before." I grinned.

"Yeah I just moved here a few days ago, I'm starting school in that one across the street." He turned around to look out the window. "How come you're open so early?"

I grinned. "I heard that's a good school, I'm sure you'll be fine." I tapped my fingers against the counter and looked around the cafe, breathing in the coffee smell. "I guess I just really like my job and I don't mind coming in early if it means getting out of my house and coming here."
