There were plants everywhere.
The first thing I noticed about the place Cara Holden resided in were the bright green ferns engulfing the entire lower part of the house and the tall droopy willow tree draping over the expanse of the roof.
"I'm not going in there." Carli glued her face to the window. Her wide eyes scanned the front yard. "Looks like the kind of place a witch would hide out in."
"Yeah," Eli said. "a hot witch."
I rolled my eyes and cut off the engine. Time to roll.
"You two try not to kill each other until I come back." I slammed the car door and made my way to the front of the house. Unlike Eli's house, there was no doorbell. Instead there was a large brass door knocker that looked like a lion holding a ring in its mouth. Interesting.
The worn wooden door opened to a fairly short girl with light blond almost white hair and big blue eyes. If anything she resembled Tinkerbell. Not a witch.
She rubbed her eyes. "Look, I'm not interested in anything you're selling." She finished and shut the door in my face.
"Wait! I'm Lacy McFarland and I'm not selling anything. Not really anyways. Well kind of maybe, but not really. Wait!" I shouted and knocked repeatedly on the door.
I attempted one last bang before giving up and trudging back to the car.
Eli and Carli's faces were pressed up against the car's glass windows watching the scene intensely.
I got back in the car and pulled the small piece of paper out and stared at it. "She thought I was a salesman." I laughed before starting the car. "And for the record, she looks more like a pixie than a witch."
We started to roll out as I spotted a short figure running towards the car. I immediately stopped.
Cara ran up to the car and got in the back on the left side. "I had to water my plants." She rushed out of breath. "Periwinkle is so hard to maintain. Dies just like that!" She snapped enthusiastically.
I just nodded, quite confused at all that was happening.
Carli expertly moved her body so that none of it was touching Cara. Cara reached her hand to the front of the car to shake mine. After two shakes, she let go of mine and proceeded to Eli, whom gently picked up her hand and kissed it. After he whispered 'The pleasure is all mine'. She snatched her hand away and went on to Carli, who picked up her hand like it was some kind of nasty roach and then squirted pink pomegranate hand sanitizer into her hands when finished.
I spoke up, trying to divert Cara's attention from Carli's rude behavior. "You're probably wondering why you're here, considering that I never got the chance to tell you."
She gave me a sheepish look. "Sorry about what happened. I think I already know why I'm here. The drama department's funds are getting cut off."
We all gave her a weird look and Carli mumbled, "I told you guys she's a witch."
Cara's shoulders slumped. "I'm not weird! I swear!" She gave all of us earnest looks. "I was in the office picking up papers and I heard your conversation with Principal Bates."
I raised my eyebrows.
"I wasn't eavesdropping! I just overheard." She finished weakly before buckling her seatbelt."
I laughed and crossed out her name.
ELI WESLEY: 59 WESTBROOK LANE
CARLI REMINGTON: WESTCOAST ESTATE
CARA HOLDEN: 781 CANOE BLVD
ASHER MICHEALSON: 125 WATERS PARKWAY
"Who's next? And will there be food." Eli chirped excitedly.
I folded the paper in half not bothering to look. Partly because I didn't want to see his name and partly because I already knew the address.
"125 Waters Parkway." I rushed out quickly, hoping Carli wasn't paying attention. "And no, there won't be any food."
Actually, possibly a knuckle sandwich.
I shook my head to rid of the thought, and put the car in drive before he or anyone could ask anymore questions.
