I wake up to an empty bed. Both of the blankets are tucked around my waist, so I know that he hasn't just abandoned me; he took time to make sure I was comfortable before leaving the room. His weight is tattooed into the mattress, and I swipe my hand over the wrinkles to smooth them out. His space is still subtly warm.
There's commotion in the kitchen, so I know something has gone wrong again.
Sheriff Pat Garret swears that those lives were the last Billy the Kid would ever take. Tom explains that Billy's reward has been raised by a fortune, and that there's little probability people will pass up the opportunity to turn him in or kill him on the spot if they are given the chance to.
Just when I thought my life would actually be able to work itself out. I don't think the pain of Milo's vacancy will ever disappear, but naively I thought Billy and I would be able to comfort each other until life felt okay again. But they are going to take him from me. They want to see him hang, and soon.
Someone storms into the building with news.
"They've got him! The sheriff's got him."
Author's note: Sorry this took so incredibly long, I have my first med school exam on monday and will wrap this story up next week if there's still interest! <3 Also started working on arthur morgan inspired stories you can check out in the meantime if you like red dead redemption or otherwise western related romance since you don't necessarily need any backstory to understand it.
