The Nobody Becomes The Assistant

Y/n L/n was a business woman. A very powerful one at that. I was a nobody. Or well, I was her coffee runner. Ms. L/n was very particular with how she wanted things, I was the one who was determined to please her. I first applied for this job because I knew it was a way to get a closer eye in on how things were done around here. Ms. L/n ran a successful business, but it was almost impossible to get an application here. I won my way through because I met the woman at a coffee shop, I used to work there, she liked the way I made her coffee and offered me a larger amount of my money than I was already being paid, so she technically 'bought' me from my old job, moving me over to this company. So ever since then, I've been here.

The company was called L/n Athletics. Ms. L/n ran the second most popular sports company ever, it was high quality clothes and equipment for all. She has worked with tons of athletes, including Lebron James. She even had a small side job where she gave photo shoots for small businesses to help promote them. When she means business, she means business. One time, an old coworker who used to work here, he went by the name JP. He was unexpectedly fired after Ms. L/n found out he was trying to hookup with one of the female soccer players. She had a rule for that kind of stuff, no infatuations with any of the celebrities and athletes who walk into this building.

She was strict, but fair. I've stood beside her one time for a meeting, seen the way she's done things and the way she demands around. She's very professional and mature, but she doesn't let anyone walk all over her. I always admired that, I look up to her, both physically and mentally.

I felt comfortable with her, she was the only one who didn't look at me differently when the news about me being intersex spread like wildfire through the building. Some of the executives steered out of my way whenever they would see me, I never understood why and I still don't, but Ms. L/n just treated me the same way as before. She was always nice to me, a very sweet woman who cared about my opinions and feelings, she treated me like a human being. And she rained down hellfire on anyone who decided to disrespect me in front of my face, if anyone does that anymore, she fires them.

That's another new rule she added. No more homophobic or hateful comments, if she heard any, the person who said it, was to be fired immediately. But like I said, Ms. L/n is strict but she's fair. And that's just how her business works. I should know, I've been here for almost a year now.

"Hailee." The woman called out, I quickly glanced up, scrambling to my feet from my chair as I walked over to be by her side immediately. Ms. L/n looked at me, folding her hands together in her lap as her chair slowly turned around, revealing her piercing y/e/c eyes, gazing into mine. One could say her looks can kill. "I need a black coffee and a scone, please." I stood there for a moment, she knew I was taking a moment to memorize her order. Sometimes I mixed it up, forgetting but she never got mad, she was very understanding. "Can you do that, sweetie?"

She always used pet names for me, I didn't mind them, the only problem was they made me blush. I mean, she's a very attractive woman who is demanding yet soft at the same time, she was intimidating, professional, but friendly too. I wouldn't lie, I did have a small crush, but rules were rules. Although it never explicitly said that there could be no coworker-coworker relationships, I was always cautious. Many people have asked me out, mostly guys, who have offered to take me home some nights, hoping to get something in return. Sexually. But my answer was always no, I was loyal to a woman I had a tiny crush on and it felt almost impossible for her to fall for me. She looked as straight as a ruler, and she most likely had a husband, even if I saw no ring on her finger.

"Yes, ma'am." I nod my head to her question, seeing the woman hum in satisfaction as she leaned back into her chair, her hands grabbing onto the thick packets of contracts on her desk. I stood there for a couple seconds, waiting to see if she'd like to add anything else, when I received no other comment, I turned on my heel, and exited the room.

I dusted off the pretend dust on the shoulder of my blazer, I usually did that to keep myself busy whenever some of the working men walk by me. I only did that because during work hours, I wasn't allowed on my phone unless it was for emergencies, so almost all the time, I stood by this stupid, old coffeemaker. It was outdated and needed new machinery parts to get it working at a high-powered pace. I would ask Ms. L/n, but I'm too shy.

As I poured the black coffee into the woman's favorite mug, I began to grab the scone I prepared for her from the oven. I make any food item fresh for her, she loves it that way, it pleases her. Perks of being a part-time barista and now it's my full-time job for much more pay. I gently wrapped the scone in a napkin, feeling the warmth of it radiating in my hand as I walked down the series of halls, finding my destination back to Ms. L/n's room.

As soon as I stepped foot through the door, shutting it behind me for the woman's privacy reasons, I heard some yelling coming from across the room. I look over at the desk where Ms. L/n stood, her eye twitched angrily as I watched her assistant, Amelia, argue with her.

"You think somebody can do my job better than I can?" Amelia snarled, her voice like venom but it never poisoned Ms. L/n, if anything, the business woman was way more powerful.

"Yes, I do." I see my boss glance up for a moment, clearly not expecting me so soon but her face remains, raising her hand in the hair. "Hailee, come here." She signaled me and I looked around confused for only a split second before rushing on my feet to be at her desk. "Congrats, Hailee, you're my new assistant." She smiled cockily, Amelia throwing her hands up in frustration.

"She can't do my job. Her? Of all people?" Amelia thrashed around. On the outside, I didn't seem to really care about her words, but I did take them to heart, it hurt, it did and I'm guessing Ms. L/n was the only one to catch that.

"Shut up." She growled quietly, immediately quieting the dark-skinned woman who was in a predicament. "Don't talk to my employees like that, you're fired, pack your shit, I don't want to see you anymore." The woman snapped her fingers, signaling to her bodyguards to escort Amelia out. Once the woman was gone, I turned to my boss, my tone unsure.

"Why me, ma'am? I'm honored, don't get me wrong, but why me? I'm a nobody." I muttered quietly. I hear the chair squeak, meaning she sat back down. Her breathing was a lot calmer, her anger decreasing by the second since Amelia's presence was no longer with us in the room.

"I believe in you, Hailee. You've been a great employee so far and I'd like to see what more you can do." Ms. L/n expressed softly, bringing her leg over the other as she sat so professionally, yet elegantly as well. "Now, you start being my new assistant tomorrow, so report here tomorrow morning at 8 am, and wear a nice suit." She ordered, her tone commanding but gentle as well. "I have no doubt you'll make me proud with this new position."

"Thank you, ma'am." I smiled gratefully, my hands behind my back as I beamed up at her, a smile formed on her own face, which was a rare sight for most people, but I saw it often.

"Oh, and call me, Y/n." She added before I made my getaway out the door, ready to go home. I smiled, nodding in response to her statement. "Drive safe, Hailee." Y/n called out once more in a caring tone before I shut her office door, feeling lighter on my feet. Maybe this new position will be better. Who knows?

I walked out to my car, unlocking it as I made my way home, making sure to be safe like Y/n said to be. I pulled up into the driveway of my house, I could practically hear my dogs barking excitedly from inside the house. I chuckled to myself, unlocking the door as I open it, Martini and Brando, my two little fluff balls, jump on my legs. I smiled as I shut the door, throwing my keys in the tray on the table beside the door. My phone suddenly went off, making me scramble to search for it in my coat. Once it was out, I clicked on the button, seeing a text message in the Lock Screen.

'Change of plans, Hailee. Meet me at the cafe down the street of the building, tomorrow, same time'

It was from Y/n, a smile formed on my face without my knowledge as I responded with a 'yes ma'am', turning my phone off as I made my way upstairs, to my bedroom, to sleep a peaceful night.
