What Powered Zane

Onyx had always known that every time they fought, they were risking their lives. It was simply a fact of being a ninja, and deep down, she'd known that someday, something like this would happen. She just hadn't expected it to happen so soon. They were a team. They weren't supposed to lose one of their own.
Onyx cried as Borg began to speak, and Lloyd put a gentle arm around her, the hollow feeling having subsided and been replaced with grief.

"I used to think technology would be the answer to all of our problems, but then I saw technology invent new problems. Devastating problems. And then a Nindroid named Zane saved us all. He was the perfect balance between us and technology. He taught us that life should be a balance. Technology can improve our lives, but so can people. And if we focus on one at the expense of the other, that's when the balance is off. Our city will find its way again, but this time with Zane as our compass. With that, I give to you the Titanium Ninja," Borg said, turning around to pull the sheet off of the thing behind him.

Onyx gasped as he unveiled a titanium statue of Zane. The metallic form's hand reached out to the sky, and the face perfectly captured Zane's kind, welcoming expression. "So, what happens after this?" Nya murmured, sitting beside the others on a bench. "I don't know," Cole admitted. "And I don't care. Today's about Zane," Jay said, choking back tears. "Does it matter?" Onyx whispered.

"And now Kai would like to speak for those who knew him best," Borg said, wheeling himself aside. Kai stepped forward, staring off at the horizon. "Everyone wondered what powered Zane. I don't know if we'll ever know, but I'd like to think it was brotherhood. Because he powered me. And he'll still power me as his memory lives on. Ninja never quit, and ninja will never be forgotten. Wherever you are, Zane, you'll always be one of us," he said, voice wavering at the end.

Onyx looked up as soft white flurries began to fall from the sky, drifting down and landing on her eyelashes, melting and mingling with the salty tears on her face.
