Maka sighed. It would be half an hour before Kid and Tsubaki would be there to pick them up. She looked at the minor scrapes on her arm. She then looked over at Soul, with gaping wounds and a wrist brace stabilizing his left wrist.
He had always been that way, putting himself in harm's way to keep her safe. He'd told her why once, and it still crossed her mind every once in a while.
'Maka, I don't just protect you because I have to. That's only one reason. But the other reason is..Is because I love you. And if it ever comes down to my own death, I still promise I'll keep you safe. No matter what is costs..'
It had been over three years ago since he said this, but he still lived up to it. He had never been the type of guy to not fulfill a promise.
"You still remember that day, don't you.." Soul spoke up, not lifting his head.
"Of course. You were literally on the verge of death. Yet..Yet you still keep that same promise.."
Two years ago, during a fight, it almost came to Soul's death. Maka remembered it all the time. Every time she thought of it, she started to cry. Through it all, he was always there for her. The death of her father, the countless fights she'd start, everything.
And she was always there for him. The countless restless nights, the suicide attempts, depression. Every time, she'd be there, to talk him out of it. To save the life of someone close to her.
"Soul, I want you to look at me when I say this.."
"Say what..?" He looked up at her, his bangs slightly stained red.
"If I had ever lost you, it would be like losing a part of myself. We've been through so much as a team. Six years of it. The deaths, the depression, the simple life of two...I guess I can say 'special' teenagers. And just.." she could feel the tears welling up. "I can't lose you..Not like I lost Dad..or Mom..or my older sister, Anna.." she hung her head, wiping away the tears.
"Maka, look at me."
The blonde looked up at her partner, only to be surprised by him pressing his lips against hers.
