"....and love is a scary thing. If not reciprocated, it can turn a person into a monster."

The world seemed to slow around Maya as she watched her crush... her one sided lover, kissing his girlfriend.

Her heart seemed to be torn apart each and every time she saw them together. And yet, she couldn't think about forgetting him. So she would try to mend her heart every time, only for it to be torn apart yet again.

Daniel, the school's basketball captain and heartthrob, was perfect, atleast in her eyes. He was every girl's dream boy, including her's.

She had started to like him even before he met his girlfriend. She felt she knew about him more than anyone could ever know. Yet, she felt like she was Tantalus. Every time she tried to go closer to him, he seemed to drift away from her.

She thought he liked her back, she was damn sure about it. She would do anything for him, to the extent of helping him by changing his grade by sneaking into the teacher's desk. And when she was caught, he pushed her under the bus by telling the teacher he was not involved in any of those.

And yet, she loved him.

Even if her mind told her to run away from there, far away from him, her body seemed to listen to her heart. She watched them as though she was put under a spell.

"Babe...you are such a great kisser..." "Just enjoy it bae..." The sound of making out filled the corridor. The students hooted and recorded them. Others encouraged them. As for Maya, she stood rooted to the ground, feeling her vision become bleary due to tears.

The bell rang, indicating the end of the extremely boring History class, which Maya did not concentrate on one bit. Her thoughts were filled with images of Daniel and his girlfriend, Kylie, making out.

She looked up at Daniel, who was seated a few seats behind her. He looked like he was not interested in the lecture. The way his hair fell effortlessly as he ran his hand through it seemed to hypnotize her. His eyes were half-lidded, showing his lack of interest. The pen in his hands seemed to spin around to his fingers' will.

"And today's assignment is to write a three page essay on the American Civil War. I want it to be submitted by this week. The class is dismissed"

Maya got up from her seat and began walking out to her next class.

"Maya!" She froze as she recognised the voice. She immediately swiped a stray hair behind her ear and held her books close to her chest as she turned around to see Daniel.

"I have a party at my house tomorrow....so..." Her interest piqued at his words. "Is he gonna invite me to the party?" She thought as she adjusted her specs.

"Can you do my essay?"Her hopes shattered when she heard what he said. "Y...yeah...sure." She wore a forced smile as she tried to stop her tears. "Thanks man...you're a lifesaver!"

Maya cracked her knuckles and pushed up her specs as she finally finished her and Daniel's essay. She got up from her chair and slowly walked towards her bed. She collapsed on her bed and left a huge sigh.

She opened her phone and earphones and began to listen to some music. She began to play 'snowman' and began to imagine herself with Daniel.

The spotlight seemed to fall on the both as the world around fell dark.He smiled at her and extended his hand. "Care to join for a dance?" His voice was filled with love, to which she replied by nodding excitedly.
