“And they can’t understand, what hurts more—missing the other person, or pretending not to.”
❤️❤️❤️❤️
A few months later
Maya felt the eyes of several people as she crossed the corridor. She was not the usual bubbly self anymore. It was as if she had switched off all of her emotions.
Only she knew about all the sleepless nights she had to endure, with no one to share comfort with other than her pillow, which gladly accepted her tears and soaked it up for her.
Her long hair was cut short, her clothing style no longer cheerful, rather gloomy. It added to her sorrowful aura.
The past few months had been extremely hard for her, as she tried to move on from the incident. She received several mockings from people she had never seen before.
What hurt the most was she had never ever hurt any of their feelings before, and yet, here they were, mocking her for no apparent reason.
Kaily had become her arch nemesis, often taking it as her business to make Maya's life as miserable as possible.
And as for Daniel, she had never seen him after that incident. She would often avoid having contact with him. She knew that if she saw him again, all of her wounds which she took so long to mend, would be broken.
She knew it was still ever so fragile, just like a broken glass. Even the slightest of pain would make it crumble again, possibly never be able to heal.
Murmurs filled the room as she entered the classroom. Curious students, who were oblivious of what had happened, got the information through old students. And now everyone seemed to know about what has happened. Maya didn't want her second year to be messy.
She groaned internally as she went to sit down in a desk as no one wanted to share a desk with her. A group of girls seated in the desk next to her started to whisper among each other, which Maya could hear clearly.
"Apparently she tried to separate the it couple, Daniel and Kylie."
"Well, she got what she deserved. She was also publicly rejected by Daniel."
"Who wouldn't. Look at her. She looks like she came out of her bed. And that is the most miserable pair of jeans I've ever seen"
"Atleast it's less miserable than your life." Maya replied nonchalantly as she opened her textbook, not even sparing a glance at them.
She could feel their anger radiating towards her. She was used to this. Whispers and murmurs quietened as the professor entered the classroom.
"Good Morning students! Welcome to the new academic year of college! I hope you all are excited to learn more"
Groans echoed throughout the room as students listened to the usual banter of the professor which everyone knew was not coming from his heart. He was as disappointed as everyone to be teaching a bunch of yet to become adults.
"Excuse me professor!" The room was filled with a new voice. Maya was least concerned as she began doodling in her notes. "Ah young mister! Late on the first day. Care to explain why you are late?"
