"you're so cool.. my bestest friend ... you're like basically a guy." he mumbles, smiling slightly.

you felt your heart break. a guy? seriously? you feel yourself beginning to tear up but you fought it off. no. you couldn't cry. he's drunk... he doesn't mean it ..right?

"a guy...?" you mutter, looking deep into his eyes with a hurt expression.

"yeah like... you just get me you know. you're like the guy friend i never had." alex chuckles, as if he thought that it would make things better.

you look to the ground. you could feel your lip beginning to quiver. no you wouldn't cry. you said before you wouldn't. but why did this hurt so much?

"alex," you began, your voice tinged with a hint of exasperation. "im not just your 'guy friend.' i'm a girl, and you're well aware of that."

you look at his face again, he was looking at you, with a face like a puppy that's just been told off. you felt a tear beginning to fall down you face.
fuck.

alex, still a little tipsy, looked at you with a mixture of confusion and realization. the gravity of his words seemed to dawn on him, and he mumbled an apology, "i didn't mean it like that, (y/n). i'm just a bit... you know."

you reply, "i know you're drunk alex."

"so you've got to excuse my words" alex looks at you. "i'm not thinking right tonight."

you sighed, your frustration simmering beneath the surface. "it's not just about tonight, alex."

"what..." he whispers.

you avoid eye contact.

"it's like you don't find me important enough for you anymore. it hurts."

alex's gaze faltered, the weight of your words sinking in. "(y/n), i.. i didn't mean to hurt you. you're still very important to me. i care so much about you."

"i care about you too alex.." you mutter. "but...."

"but what?" he replies.

you meet his gaze, your eyes reflecting a mix of hurt and longing. "sometimes, it feels like you don't see me at all. you see what you want to see."

"what do you- what are you talking about?" he responds, confused.

you sighed, your frustration easing into a mix of understanding and disappointment. "sometimes, alex, it feels like you don't see me the way i see you."

what were you saying. had you basically just confessed to alex? you know what it was fine, he won't remember any of this in the morning.

a somber quiet settled in the room, the unspoken tension lingering between the two of you.

"oh..." he whispered, as if trying to understand what you were saying.

you abruptly stand up.

"i think i'm gonna call your mom now.. ok? to come get you?" you say to him, as if nothing happened, as if you hadn't just inadvertently confessed your love for him.

"o-oh right yeah." alex responds.

you shoot a uneasy smile at him. thank god he was drunk.

THE NEXT DAY

sunlight streamed into alex's room, casting a muted glow on the remnants of a night that seemed to blur due to his severe hangover. he groaned, his head pounding as he tried to recall the events of the previous evening.

as the memories slowly trickled in, alex winced, remembering the fight with cole and the aftermath. yet, there was a particular detail that eluded him—a conversation with you that he couldn't quite grasp.

downstairs, the aroma of coffee filled the air as alex stumbled into the kitchen. isaac, nursing a cup of coffee, shot him a knowing look.

"rough night?" isaac teased, a sly grin playing on his face.

alex rubbed his temples. "yeah, something like that. what happened?"

isaac raised an eyebrow, feigning innocence. "oh, just the usual drama. you and (y/n) had a heart-to-heart, or so i heard."

alex's brow furrowed as he tried to piece together the fragments of memory. "did we?"

isaac chuckled, taking a sip of his coffee. "you should really remember these things. (y/n) seemed pretty worked up when i came to get you with your mom last night. maybe you finally got through that thick skull of yours."

an uneasy feeling settled in alex's stomach as he contemplated the implications of what isaac was suggesting.

"whatever, isaac. it's none of your business," alex muttered, irritation lacing his tone.

isaac smirked, unfazed by alex's defensiveness. "sure thing, alex. just saying, it might be time to face what's been staring you in the face all along."

alex raises his eyebrows. talking to isaac was always an experience. what was he on about.. staring in his face all long? whatever.

"well i'm going to go find jackie bye now." alex replied.

"bro is still blinded by jackie." isaac rolled his eyes.

"what?!?!" alex responded.

"i just think sometimes you need to open your eyes a bit alex. that's all." isaac smirked, and walked off leaving alex in the kitchen, alone.

alex rolled his eyes, looking confused. what was he on about? opening his eyes.. what with like girls or something? was there someone else isaac thought he loved.. he couldn't mean you, could he..?

alex thought about it. he thought of you, your beautiful smile, your laugh, the way you were always there for him. a flash of your pained expression last night crossed his mind. why had he upset you? he knew he'd been an idiot that's for sure.

as he wandered up to jackie's room, he thought deep and hard. he had always loved you before she arrived, had he taken you for granted?

maybe dating jackie was the wrong thing. maybe the right person had been in-front of him, all along. maybe you were always right for him. at some point, he had a big decision to make.
