as much as you had tried to keep your distance from alex after the events of that night, it felt like that was impossible. it was like he had suddenly become attached to your hip again. he clearly must not have remembered the events of the night of the bonfire. in fact, you were almost 100% certain he hadn't a clue. ughhh men.

but you still had hope. hope that he might like you, like you liked him. especially after something he had confessed to you at a sleepover at yours the other day. it wasn't much, but it still gave you hope never the less.

FLASHBACK TO THE OTHER NIGHT
the soft glow of the bedside lamp on your bedside table illuminated your room as you and alex lounged on your bed, with a movie playing in the background. although you were both staring at the screen intensely, neither of you were really interested in it, even though it was one of your favourite films.

it was quiet.

"hey, (y/n)," alex began tentatively, his voice a whisper. "i've been thinking about something."

you turned to him, curiosity gleaming in your eyes. "what is it?"

he hesitated for a moment, as if choosing his words carefully. "i think... i think there might be something going on between cole and jackie."

your eyebrows shot up in fake surprise. you knew so obviously that was true but you put on a fake shock for his sake. "really? but you and jackie are-"

"yeah," alex interrupted, his gaze fixed on the floor, a hint of uncertainty in his voice. "but I've noticed the way they interact, the way cole looks at her. it's different, you know? i mean we know what happened at the bonfire.. when she ran to him."

"oh yeah.." you observed alex closely, expecting to see signs of hurt or confusion, but his demeanour was unexpectedly calm.

"you're not upset?" you asked, a touch of concern in your voice.

alex looked up, meeting your gaze. his eyes held a depth you hadn't seen before, a vulnerability that left you momentarily speechless.

"its complicated," alex confessed, a faint smile playing on his lips. "some things just aren't meant to be."

your heart skipped a beat.

"you seem surprisingly okay with this," you remarked cautiously, trying to gauge his true feelings.

"ive been thinking a lot lately," alex admitted, his gaze lingering on you. "about who it really is that truly matters, you know?" he looks at you.
