after the bombshell alex dropped on you, it had been a few days since you had last seen him on that night. thanksgiving meant you were both too busy spending times with your families.

of course you texted frequently, but that wasn't the same as meeting up in person. you also noticed he seemed to be acting.. different. more distant.

but now it was the first day back of school, you got there early and you were currently sorting out your locker

"(y/n)" you heard a voice shout.

your heart sank a little as you looked up and caught sight of alex in the corridor, he looked... happy. you put on a brave smile.

"alex!!" you respond.

"hey," alex greeted you, he seemed excited. excited to tell you something.

"hey," you replied back with a smile.

"i have some news!" he smiled brightly at you.

"go on.." you say.

"uh well you remember the jackie thing" he starts.

"i do". you nod. "unfortunately" you think to yourself.

"well.. i uh asked her out the other day and she said yes!!!" alex blurted out, a mix of excitement and uncertainty in his eyes.

you felt a pang in your chest, a rush of emotions flooding through you. you had anticipated this moment, but the reality stung more than you had imagined.

"that's... great," you managed to say, forcing a smile despite the ache inside.

"i really couldn't have done this without you know, you really are my best friend." he says, not realising the pain this caused you.

"it's no big deal! always here to help you" you respond, through gritted teeth.

"i think i might have just ruined my life" you mutter to yourself.

"huh?" alex questions.

"nothing!" you respond. "so you're really dating? like uh actually?"

"yeah," alex nodded, a hint of guilt clouding his features. "i just wanted you to know."

you nodded, struggling to maintain composure. "i'm happy for you, alex. really. why wouldn't i be, we're best friends?"

alex glanced at you, the corners of his mouth tugging downward in concern. he noticed the faint trace of sadness in your eyes, the effort you were putting into masking your emotions. his heart sank a little, realizing the impact his news had on you.

"thanks for always being there for me, (y/n)," alex said, his voice tinged with a sense of gratitude and remorse. "you know you're still my favourite girl."

you managed a weak smile, trying your best to appear supportive despite the ache in your heart. "of course, alex. i'll always be there for you, no matter what. that's what friends are for."
