NINE

you walked up the familiar path to alex's front door, your heart racing with nerves. in all honesty, you hadn't expected his message asking you to come over. taking a deep breath, you knocked and waited.

alex answers the door.

"hey.. come in. i bet you're freezing." he says, taking note of the down pour of rain you're stood in.

as you stepped into the walter house, you noticed the tension etched on his face, his demeanor betraying a sense of shock and uncertainty. you offered a tentative smile, trying to gauge the reason behind his unexpected invitation.

"are you- are you ok?" you start only to be quickly interrupted by alex.

"come on, let's go to my room to talk" he interrupts, dragging you by your hand up the stairs.

"woah someone's eager!" you joke, trying to get a smile out of him.

alex gives you a soft smile.

"yeah.. i don't know i feel like i need to tell you this privately." he says.

you give him a confused look but let him drag you to his shared bedroom.

as you enter, you take a seat on his bed. he takes a seat next to you. your heart raced with anticipation as you waited for him to say something.

"(y/n).." he starts.

"alex." you respond, looking at him in the eyes.

"(y/n)... jackie she.. she.." alex starts.

"she what?" you look at him, expectantly but almost comfortingly.

"she.. she.. broke up with me," he confessed, his voice tinged with disbelief.

what. the. fuck.

you felt like your heart had skipped a beat, a rush of conflicting emotions swirling within you. although, of course, this was horrible for alex, you couldn't help being a little excited. was it selfish? maybe. but you didn't care.

"oh my god, i-, alex i'm so sorry," you replied, your voice laced with sympathy as you reached out to comfort him.

alex moved further back onto the bed, his thoughts spinning as he grappled with the sudden turn of events. "i can't believe it. i thought everything was going well, but... i guess i was blind."

your pulse quickened at his words, a glimmer of hope flickering within you. could he mean he was blind to you? surely he must do. yet, for some reason, a sense of apprehension gnawed at you, you were scared. if this was true, you could be just a rebound to him. yes you had been best friends for years, but surely this was a bit stupid.. it took him a whole relationship and a whole break up to see you were always right there waiting for him.

"(y/n).." he started, looking at you deeply.

"alex.." you whisper, looking back at him.

"i've been blind, (y/n). blind to what's been right in front of me all along." alex continued, his voice tinged with remorse.

your heart swelled. the confession you had secretly yearned for was unfolding before you, yet the weight of his words bore the burden of a feeling of being a last resort. why was he doing this now?

you felt like you were going to do something stupid.

"alex stop." you mutter.

"what." he responds, looking a bit put out.

your chest tightened at the words. "alex, i don't want to be your second choice. not just because jackie broke up with you."

"you're not my second choice (y/n)" alex's eyes widened.

"but why." you start.

"why what?" he responds, confused.

"why are you doing this now? why are you doing this the same day jackie broke up with you?! it's not fair to anyone. to her, to you, to me.." you respond, sounding as if you were holding back tears (you were).

"(y/n).." alex puts his hand on your shoulder.

"alex. i'm sorry. ive spent pretty much my whole life loving you. and you're come to this realisation now, the same day you get broken up with? i feel like a rebound, you have to understand me." you look at him, a tear running down your cheek.

alex reaches out and wipes your tear away.

"(y/n).. talk to me." he whispers.

"alex.. when jackie arrived, i felt like i'd been put a side. you didn't care about me as much anymore. we weren't as close as before, you spent as much time with her as possible, even before you were dating. don't you know how that made me feel?"
you looked at him, your lip quivering.

"oh (y/n)" alex starts.

you look down.

"im so so sorry. im- oh my god" he continues, wrapping his arms round you.

"im so sorry.." he repeated, muttering in your ear.

"its fine now." you whisper back.

"i guess i'll always forgive you no matter what.." you chuckled, softly.

alex smiled.

it went silent. you both looked at each other. alex's eyes flickered down to your lips.

with a hesitant yet determined gesture, he leaned forward, his lips meeting yours in a tender kiss.

for a fleeting moment, time seemed to stand still as you lost yourself in the warmth of the embrace, the world outside fading into insignificance.

but as quickly as it had begun, the moment shattered, reality crashing back in with a jolt. you pulled away abruptly, your breath coming in short, uneven gasps as you scrambled to compose yourself.

"i-i cant do this now.. i... i've got to go, " your voice trembled with uncertainty, your words barely above a whisper as you rose from the bed, your heart racing with a mix of fear and confusion.

you ran out of his room, down the stairs and out of the door.

what the fuck just happened.!!!!! alex just pretty much confessed to you and kissed you!! and you.. RAN AWAY?!?! you were so stupid.

and now you really regretted not bringing a coat. it was chucking it down. you quickly started walking down the road to your house, your head down.

"(y/n). wait." you heard a voice shout. you stoped in your tracks and turned round.

unbeknown to you, alex had ran to catch you up and followed you out the house. he was going to make this right. he needed to. he couldn't lose you.

"alex.."
