Katherina's POV:

I was slowly brought around by the sound of Lester's voice. He was being surprisingly soothing for a change, maybe it was the shock of his tone that woke me up.

"Katherina." He sang softly as he gently shook my shoulder. "Kitty Cat." He tried again.

Kitty Cat was something he used to call me when I was a little girl. See Lester grew up with my father, the best of friends, and was basically my uncle. This isn't something many people know though, in fact only Cutter knows as the Cutters and the Shadows (my fathers family) have been family friends for longer than can be remembered. There's also the fact James is rather emotionless so it wasn't exactly obvious. He was a constant in my life until my twin disappeared and even then it was only a few months until I was employed under him at The ARC. Nick and Helen had both been in and out of my life until I turned 11 when Helen disappeared. Nick became absorbed in finding her and stopped visiting. I hadn't seen him from then until I was 19 and turned up on his doorstep. You can't imagine how weird it was for both my father's closest friends to end up working together on something so strange, considering their paths had never actually crossed before.

"Come on girl, your father will rip me to shreds if you don't wake up soon." James whispered as he rocked me slightly and brought me out of thoughts of my childhood.

I moaned lightly and rolled my head, I brought my hand to my temple where a jolting pain was ripping though me and wasn't surprised when my hand came away slick with blood.

That guard genuinely didn't need to him me that hard, jeeze.

Lester lightly supported my back as I sat up and helped me prop myself against the wall. Spirals of grey streaked across my vision and I had to swallow the urge to vomit as I fought dizziness.

"We got any painkillers down here?" I mumbled.

"Afraid not." Jenny said softly.

Suddenly a loud crash, the sound of flesh hitting flesh, could be heard from outside the door. Then there was a loud thud before the door was opened by our one and only captain of security, as he dragged the body of a limp guard inside.

His hair was slightly askew, one random hair hanging over his forehead, but otherwise he looked perfectly fine.

He immediately spotted me by the corner and ran over. He placed both his hands on either side of my jaw as he lent in front of me, his fingers gently probing the cut on my temple.

My next action, I can only blame on the fact I was still dazed by the hit. As he knelt in front of me, his concern warmed me and I slowly lifted my hand to push that random piece of hair back into place with the rest of them. I smiled at him while he simply stared at me, slightly shocked by the act of affection I suppose.

"I'm sorry I wasn't there." He whispered, an angry look on his face.

"What could you have done?" I asked with a pointed look. "If you had been with us they would have caught you too and you wouldn't have been able to come rescue us."
