Lilith, the failed bride of the first man, wandered aimlessly through the forests of Eden. It had been some time since she rejected Adam. Perhaps a month, or perhaps more. She was content with her life without responsibility. In truth, she was really occupying her mind while waiting for someone. Someone not of the same ilk as Adam. Someone whose location was never known to her until he appeared. Each time he did, she saw it as a gift. Sure enough, he, the angel Samael, appeared before her from a white smoke.
Lilith instinctively placed her hand gently into Samael's. He spoke not a word, yet Lilith knew he wanted her to follow him. The angel calmly stepped, and Lilith followed. The forest was different when she was with Samael. A different sort of vibe came over her when she walked through it with him. It pleased her greatly. For a while she carried on beside him, not once questioning their destination. Rather, she valued the walk. Her focus was impeded when the two came upon an inclination in the ground. Samael stopped.
Samael: Dear Lilith, please, would you kindly close your eyes? I wish to show you something in a special way. I promise, I will guide you up this incline and never let you fall.
Lilith closed her eyes just as Samael asked.
Samael: Now, carefully follow me.
Lilith did as he told her. She treasured the angel's hand guiding her to something she knew would be special. After a short walk up the inclination, Samael stopped and then carefully placed his hands on Lilith and pushed her softly as an instruction to turn around.
Samael: Now you may open your eyes.
Lilith opened her eyes again. Before her was a view of the forest she had been aimlessly traveling within. And beyond the forest was the sacred garden where she had first seen Adam.
Samael: It's beautiful, isn't it? Eden?
Lilith: Quite frankly, it's overrated. It'd be better if I could've shared it with Adam.
Samael: You could have. But-
Lilith: But I'd be his wife. I don't want that. I don't love him.
Samael: I understand. Lilith, would you look out beyond this cliff? What do you see?
Lilith turned to see what lied behind her. She saw a landscape of dirt and rocks. But there were no plants growing from the ground. There were no animals playing or sleeping. It was a disappointing sight.
Lilith: It's... ugly. Lifeless.
Samael: Someday, God may give it purpose. But for now, it's an empty canvas.
Lilith: Do you think there's a place for me out there?
Samael lowered his head.
Samael: Lilith.
Samael took Lilith's hands in his.
Samael: There is nothing out there for you. And you are unfit... Eden is unfit for you. But...
A tear rolled down Samael's cheek.
Samael: God has created a place. A world other than Heaven, Eden, and-
Samael gestured to the miserable landscape beyond the edge of Eden.
Samael: What he will call this.
Lilith: He has? So... he cares about me after all. He forgives me.
Samael: No, Lilith. He has not forgiven you. He did make a new realm, but not just for you. He... he's made a prison. A realm of punishment.
Lilith: What!?
Lilith took a small step back in surprise. Samael held tightly onto her hands.
Samael: The Lord knows of a potential plot against him. This place, this prison, is a contingency. Lilith... Dear Lilith.
Samael's hands quivered.
Samael: I must ask you to leap from this cliff. Leave Eden in a graceful freefall. And die.
Lilith shuddered upon hearing those last two words.
Lilith: How could you say that!? What... What do you mean die!? Like what the fruit would do to me!? But surely if I fall and die, that would also disobey the wishes of God!
Samael: You're wrong, Lilith. God wishes for you to die, and to enter the new world.
Lilith pulled her hands away from Samael's.
Lilith: I've defied him before... I defy him again!
Samael sighed.
Samael: God knew this may happen. That you would refuse. It's alright. I'll make sure you do not disrespect the Lord despite your choice.
Lilith: I knew you'd help me, Sam! Thank you!
Samael reached down and took hold of Lilith's hand, which he kissed.
Samael: Despite my duties, I cannot help but love you.
Lilith: I love you too! If there was ever a man I'd love and marry, it's you!
Samael: I know. And that makes this much harder. But God's will must be done. God commands it.
Lilith: Sam? What do you me-
Samael closed his eyes shut and gave Lilith a great shove.
