My eyes naturally fluttered open as the sun's bright and merciless rays passed through the small crack in the yellow curtains and made their way right to my tired and heavy eyelids. I knew I would have to get up eventually but eventually was not now. The silky sheets clung to me as if to remind me that the bed was warm and the outside world was not. "Five more minutes" I promised myself in a tired whisper before giving in and letting sleep overtake me once again.
When my eyes opened again I was met with the sounds of a loud debate amongst my roommates about Merlin knows what...from what I could gather it seemed to have something to do with quill ink and robes. I loved my roommates and I would never want to see them hurt; so in order to prevent a brutal stabbing in the dormitory I allowed myself to push eventually back another ten minutes or so. I closed my eyes and turned so I was facing the wall in a weak and useless attempt to block out the sounds of Rosemary's joyful giggling.
After about fifteen minutes of this process of deciding to get up and then deciding that I would get up eventually I was finally ready to face the day. My blue-gray eyes opened without protest and my pale pink lips pressed together into a peaceful smile as I enjoyed my last few moments in the sanctuary known to most English-speakers as a bed. This sense of peace lasted for the better half of three seconds before a pillow was plowed down into my face with an amazing amount of force...repeatedly.
"Scarlet! You missed breakfast!" Hazel spoke loud enough to receive my undivided attention but her tone remained innocent and playful. As she spoke she plowed the pillow against my head for what must of been the hundredth time. "And you're going to be late" she said as the pillow hit my face yet again. "And then you're going to be expelled" I could tell she was trying to be serious but even she couldn't help but giggle at the irrationality of her statement. She made up for this break in character by hitting me yet again.
"AND THEN YOU'RE GONNA DIE" my other roommate ,Rosemary, screamed like a maniac as she jumped out of the hamper and onto my bed catching both myself and Hazel off guard. She giggled in complete disregard for our fear and began jumping on my bed. Her joyful demeanor and short stature were enough to make her pass for a five year old if it weren't for her stellar curves and her extreme usage of rather adult profanity . Hazel liked to joke that she simply hadn't been taught to hate the world yet; and that, as her roommates, it was our job to take care of that by the time she graduated. If she was right we were failing at our job. The pounding of the pillow on my head and the shaking of my bed caused by Rosemary's jumping was enough to make me stand up my face greeting Hazel's with a sarcastic smile. Her brown eyes were still tired but had been covered in enough makeup to fool anyone...well anyone who hadn't lived with her since first year. Her glossy red hair shook with her as she laughed while her pale freckled cheeks turned to a very prominent red. "You have ten minutes to get your lazy ass all the way to Snape's room" she teased. "Good morning to you as well Rosey" I smiled ruffling my fingers in her hair in a patronizing way taking full advantage of our one-inch height difference. Rosemary jumped of the bed and hugged me tightly around my waist. "Happy Friday morning Scar" she said sweetly. It was obvious she was trying to make me forget about her scaring the living shit out of me but at the moment I didn't care. I hugged her back and placed my head on top of her own as I whispered "Happy Friday morning, favorite roommate." looking directly at Hazel as I spoke. Hazel stuck her tongue out at me before pulling Rosemary away and dragging her out the door so that I could get dressed. "See you in Care of Magical Creatures!" Hazel yelled when they were already halfway down the hall.
My shirt was buttoned wrong and my tie had been thrown lazily around my neck but it was the best I could do with three minutes before class. I quickly pulled on my black skirt followed by my yellow converse practically tripping due partially to my speed and partially due to lack of balance. I looked in the mirror to see my bare face, usually it was a useful reminder that I still needed to put on make up but now it seemed to be taunting me reminding me only of my lack of time. My medium length black hair was still in the bun I always slept in to keep it out of my face and I didn't dare undo it to see the tangled mess that inevitably awaited me.I guess it wasn't too bad...I mean I looked tired but who didn't at eight in the morning? Being from California I had the remnants of a natural tan left over from summer (It was early October) and although some mascara would of been wonderful at least my bangs covered the pimple on my forehead, right? It would have to do for now. I quickly grabbed my robe in order to cover my mess of an outfit and threw my bag over my shoulder praying I hadn't forgotten anything before rushing out the door.
