Cleo decided not to mention the conversation she had overheard, however she decided to take the twins out of school and have them stay on base from now on.
It wasn't long though before the rumours reached the base and was causing quite a stir amongst the soldiers and the officers alike.
cleo overheard one soldier talking to Mae in her clinic...
"How can anyone think such awful things about Cleo and the twins? I don't know any folks that are kinder or sweeter it makes me so angry."
"It's because of their eyes. People are superstitious and believe that two different coloured eyes is a mark of the devil, it's so sad."
Mae responded the sorrow in her voice clear.
a base wide meeting was held and it was decided that everyone would ignore the rumours in the hope that they would die out; unfortunately the Lord of the city and the wolves boss did not feel the same way as they were soon to find out.
A couple of weeks had passed and the talk in the city had not died down in fact it had worsened with people now saying that the weather, (poor or glorious), their illness or even just a sneeze was the fault of cleo and the twins.
cleo was training in the courtyard when she noticed a commotion at the main gates, it was a messenger from Lord Wilson and a small contingent of palace guards, she watched as they were led to her father's office.
A short while later Pup came over to cleo unable to hide the concern on his face.
"Charlie wants to see you Kitten." was all he said before turning on his heels and walking back the way he came, cleo followed quickly trying to calm her nerves.
"Ah there you are Cleo. These men are here to escort you to the palace for an audience with our benefactor Lord Wilson."
Cleo could see that her father was deeply troubled by this and she noticed a hint of fear in Jax's eyes which made her own nerves flare.
cleo left the base escorted by the guards; Pup had said he would look after the twins and tell them what was happening.
As she looked back at her family cleo saw a solitary tear fall from her father's eye, her nerves turned to a deep feeling of dread.
Stealing her nerves cleo entered the great hall of the palace where Lord Wilson was sat waiting.
"That will do. Stand right there." He bellowed at her, she froze on the spot.
"So you're the devil-woman, huh? I've heard many tales of you and your exploits and I must say I'm impressed. However I require proof that you are indeed she."
He nodded to the guard at her left who then stripped away the sash covering her tattoo.
"Oh hoho. It really is you, my apologies but you appeared a little to dainty to be the lady I require."
He laughed while examining the horned dragon tattoo that enveloped cleos entire arm, then a voice from behind her distracted Lord Wilson.
"Ooooh she's a pretty one. I would like to play with her, is she for me brother?" The voice was almost childlike, cleo turned to see Lord Wilsons brother Lord James leering at her, but as he reached a hand towards cleo Lord Wilson clapped his hands loudly making everyone jump slightly.
"Now James the good Lady Death is not a toy."
cleo grimaced at the name, she had not thought she would ever hear it again but there it was, Lord Wilson really knew of her.
