CHAPTER THIRTEEN
After a week of observing, researching, and studying different data about the case Alex's mom was handling before she disappeared, they finally moved to the headquarters in the city of London. The way it looked is almost the same as the central office so it still feels like home. They discussed and planned the next steps they would take in order to accomplished the mission and to find out what happened to the other missing agents and to Agent SEC0963 – Alex's mom.
Shouting resounded to every corner of the small four walled office of the director of The Eye, London Headquarters.
"It's a very dangerous mission for an eighteen year old agent! We sacrificed so many more experienced agents for that mission and I don't think it is wise to pass the responsibility to a teenager!" the director yelled.
Alex wanted to stand up from her chair but the glare from Nick made her stop. It's not wise to go against him especially right now.
"Director Warren, that teenager has been an agent since she was thirteen. She has been trained by the best; our best agents experts in different fields and we all know that her potentials and her skills are exceptional itself. I know that she can handle this mission though she's young and she has the best team. Have some faith in her after all, the blood running in her veins is the same one that ran in her father's." Nick countered heatedly.
"Fine, Nicholas. But keep in the mind that she's emotionally involved in this case and emotion is not one of the ingredients that makes a mission successful. You need to be wise, alert, forget everything expect what you are ordered to do. And always, always watch your back." Director Warren strode angrily out of the office.
Alex wanted to let out a relieved sigh but after she caught a glimpse of Nick's glowering face she sucked it in. An angry Nick is more dangerous than an angry director; much, much more dangerous.
She looked at him from her peripheral view and noticed that he's trying to calm himself by breathing exercises and vigorous pacing. She sat there rigid when he turned to face her. 'Here it comes', she thought.
"We have to gather every agent involved in this case and brief them about you and what our possible strategies will be. We have to formulate plans, back up plans, parties, groups, and cells. We have to identify places where they are probably keeping your mom, search the area, find out as many facts as we can, and devise a sound plan that we can execute easily ."
She was actually surprised from what she heard. She really thought that Nick was going to give her hell for creating another trouble even before the whole thing starts. But of course, nothing's more important right now but the mission and that's where they should exert every bit of energy they have.
They went out of the office and gathered every agents who were part of the mission and briefed them about the changes that's about to occur. They formed two groups consisted of six agents that could separate into four three-man cells when the needed. They rolled out an extensive map of the whole city of London and identified some places where they could possibly start searching for the lair of the notorious organization.
It was a tedious process but no one complained. Nick and Alex were working together to organize the first searches, devised plans and numerous back up plans, and appointing agents who would lead the searches. Beth was there explaining ever plans and back up plans to each agent because that's what she's really good at, explaining things.
The team worked until the break of dawn. Cups of hot coffees were being passed around, everyone is tired and restless but slowly and painfully, the first searches were finally organized. It's scheduled to put into action the moment they set out their feet to the world outside the headquarters.
Alex approached Nick who was studying the map carefully, holding two cups of steaming coffee. "Here, you look like you need this," she passed the coffee to him and sat in one of the chairs scattered around the small room.
"So it's the three of us again; you, me, and Beth. Just like the old days."
He straightened out his form and sat on the edge of the table facing her. "Yeah, so it seems."
"Are we going to do it like the old times?"
"We could but we should also consider the fact that London is different from Alberta so maybe we should change some things."
She stood up and made her way to the map. "Yes, I think we should. We could the old ways but we should inject some new strategies. I have a feeling that this is more dangerous than the other missions we handled before."
Nick followed her and laid his hand on her shoulder. "Just keep it in your mind that your emotions should not hinder every plan we devised today. When it starts to weight you down, there's always me and Beth, we are a team and we are going to do this as a team.
"I know. How could I ever forget that I have the two of you when you're always there tailing right after me," she turned to look at him, "thank you though, for being the greatest ever."
"Of course I am," he said with a laugh.
She shoved him away and continued walking as if nothing happened. She let out a small squeal when she felt Nick carried her like a sack and ran out to the lobby. A couple of expletives could be heard from her while pummeling Nick's back with her fists. They were greeted with laughter from everyone who saw them and she thought that yes, he's really one of the best.
