The cheap lights above her head flickered, casting her in a temporary shadow before fluttering back into the dim artificial light.
She blinked up at the store’s dull lights before glancing back down at her halfway filled grocery basket. She had just recently moved from the crowded city to a more suburban neighbourhood, eager to escape the city’s thick clouds of smog and the ever growing costs of living prices.
She could barely afford to keep up with the rent for her small, one bedroom apartment, due to the rise of inflation. She couldn’t keep living in the lavish city, and in order to maintain the balanced lifestyle that she knew would benefit her health later on in life, she made the decision to fly back to the cramped two story house her parents had used to rent out as a way to earn a secondary source of income. She was glad that the recent occupants of the house suddenly decided to quit renting the house to move in with their son, a coincidence that she was overjoyed with as it hinted positively towards her stressed situation.
Reading over the ingredients that were listed in a glass jar of convenience béchemal sauce, she carefully set the bottle in her basket after making note of how much grocery cash she had saved up. As she did the mathematics silently in her mind, a cold shiver ran up her spine at the feeling of eyes piercing into her flesh.
She inconspicuously glanced to her right, peeking at the stranger who was staring deeply at her and making her feel uneasy. From the corner of her peripheral vision, she spotted the only person still lingering about the dark streets staring at her from outside of the store, focusing deeply on each action she took from behind the shop’s glass window.
Gulping nervously, she attempted to ignore the woman’s uncomfortable gaze, quickly hurrying down the aisle and down another that was located near the back of the store.
Pretending to look extremely interested at a branded bottle of strawberry scented shampoo, she felt her hands begin to tremble as the ringing of the bells that were attached at the store’s entrance rang through the silent air.
The woman had entered the shop, and judging by the soft patter of her footsteps, she wasn’t very far from her location.
Wondering why the woman was so intrigued by her that she suddenly paused outside the shop’s window and even entered the building after spotting her, she strained her brain to find any memory of ever meeting the female before. She was sure she hadn’t, the face unrecognisable and unfamiliar to her eyes. Before she could move away, a breathless voice whispered in an exhilarated tone from beside her, making her freeze.
