If i have a party you're invited 'cause you're cool (only if the bass is kickin')

Mark tuan & Bibi

The lights were low, the music so loud the bass shook the house. Johnny glided his way through the crowd, looking for a familiar face. It was easier said than done, Jackson's parties always attracted the majority of the student body. Johnny didn't really know Jackson personally, he could point him out if he had to, or get a wave if he passed him on the street but that was pretty much it. Johnny did know Mark (the one he was looking for) who happened to know people who knew Yugyeom, one of Jackson's best friends.

"You made it!" a familiar voice called out. Before he knew it, Johnny was engulfed in a hug by Mark and pushed just slightly off balanced. The two steadied themselves and Mark looked at Johnny with sparkling eyes. "What took you so long? There's someone I want you to meet." Mark waved Johnny over to a couch full of people he didn't think he'd seen a day in his life. "Jaehyun, this is Johnny. Johnny, this is Jaehyun."

Mark was pointing at one of the people on the couch who adjusted his backward facing cap and looked up at Johnny with a blinding smile. He actually did look vaguely familiar with a lollipop in his mouth that he moved around to speak. "Hey man, it's nice to finally meet you."

"Right back at ya," Johnny replied.

Mark knew Jaehyun from home. He talked about him a good amount when he and Johnny first met. Apparently they were really close before Jaehyun's family moved away a couple years before. But what better way to reunite with your childhood best friend than to attend the same college?

"Okay well, I'm getting drinks. Johnny, what do you want?" Mark asked.

"It's okay, I can get it myself—"

"No, seriously! It's fine, just tell me what you want." Mark insisted. Johnny gave in and Mark disappeared quickly, leaving Johnny with Jaehyun and the other strangers on the couch.

"So, I've heard a lot about you, Chicago," Jaehyun starts and Johnny nods with a smile.

"Likewise, Valentine boy."

That night, Johnny learns that Jaehyun is just like Mark described. His dimples are deep when he smiles and his teeth sparkle when he laughs. He isn't easy to fluster, but his ears blush when you get it right. He's clever and catches on to Johnny's jokes easily. Johnny had a lot more fun with him than he was expecting.

It isn't until Johnny's next visit to the gym that it clicks. He sees Jaehyun there and recognizes him as someone he had seen a couple times in passing last week, which is why he had seemed slightly familiar. Their eyes meet and Johnny smiles at him when Jaehyun nods in acknowledgement. From then on it's like when Johnny learns a new word and suddenly sees it everywhere. He goes from not seeing Jaehyun to seeing him everytime he goes for his scheduled routine.

The treadmill slows to a leisurely walk as Johnny gets ready to hop off. He spots Jaehyun over at the weights section, posture a bit unsure. He hovers near the bench press subtly looking around. The treadmill comes to a stop and Johnny walks over to Jaehyun, pulling out an earbud. He taps his shoulder and Jaehyun whips around.

"You need a spotter?" Johnny asks as Jaehyun fiddles with his phone. Johnny glances down on instinct just as Jaehyun presses a pause button, so he expects it when the other goes, "Sorry, what?"

Johnny smiles a bit. "Asked if you needed a spotter."

"Oh, you don't have to. I was thinking about it but it isn't that big a deal. You probably have your own routine to get back to."
