Indulge while you can
Enjoy!

“... Seriously. He's always fidgeting and stuff, like.. no, you don't need attention every second.”

“Totally. And do you see the way he's always feeling up Shinonome? Like, he doesn't belong to you. What a slag.”

“Right? We all know he just wants Shinonome to take him to the bathroom and screw him, but there's no chance of that happening.”

“Shhh, guys.. he might hear us, hee..!”

“Come on, he's a deafo. He can't hear nothin’.”

It's days like this that make school unbearable.

Which, if you're Toya Aoyagi, is every day.

They think I can't hear them, he thinks, but I do.

The plugs in his ears can only tell so much about what he knows.

And what he knows right now, in this moment, is that, once again, he's being talked about, ridiculed, and gossiped about. All while the perpetrators are right next to him.

“Hey, asshats!” His best friend, Akito Shinonome, yells across the room. “If you're gonna talk shit about my friend, at least have the decency to not do it in front of his face!”

The group of friends turn to look at him. “Oh, Shinonome is getting mad now, guys! Sorry, Shinonome-kun!” One of them yells an apology, though it was clear he wasn't genuine about it.

Akito scoffs and looks back at his partner. “You okay?” Toya looks up before nodding. “Mhm. Just…” Toya looks back at the group solemnly.

“Just…?” Akito repeats.

“It's nothing,” Toya finishes. “It's nothing.”

“Hey.. you know I'm here for you, right?” Akito questions, taking Toya's hand softly.

“Yeah,” Toya smiles. “I know.”

He knows he's lying, but he can't bring himself to care right about now.

He can hear them talking again. He knows they are. Even if he turns off the hearing aid altogether, he can't change the fact that he's being mocked.

“Did you see how Shinonome was holding his hand? Like, I feel so bad for him.”

“Exactly! He's always, like, being so nice to him, and then Aoyagi always, like, victimizes himself just so he gets pitied by everyone.”

“That's literally what I'm always thinking! I literally can't stand him, he's such an attention whore, oh my god.”

Shut up, he wants to say, please, just shut up.

The voices only succeed in making his poor, broken heart colder, just like the harsh winter.

Somewhere, deep down inside of him, he wishes that the snow that lays before him would become dyed a dark, crimson red, no matter if it belonged to him…

… or his peers.

“Guys, guys, he's literally staring.”

“What?! Oh my god, guys, shut up, shut up.”

The group of friends suddenly turn to look at him. One of them snickers and can't keep her laugh in. Soon, all of them start laughing hysterically. Toya just stands there like an idiot.

“Oh my god, we're so sorry, we were just thinking of a joke that I said the other day..” One girl says.

Toya blinks and just keeps on walking home. The group finally sighs in relief. “What a bitch, oh my god.” The same girl says. “I thought he heard us for a second.”
