"Are we there yet?"
"You ask that one more time,"Beth hurled a glare into the backseat."and we're not stopping somewhere for lunch when we finish this."
Annie rolled her eyes."Fine."
"Get ba-this is dangerous, you know."Beth ground out, whipping her head around again."You're like one of the kids. Just get back and sit on your seat like an adult."
Annie held her hands up in surrender as she pushed back from where she'd fit herself between the two front seats. She shrunk a little under Beth's exasperation and slumped back next to Faye.
"Ouch. Someone's touchy."Annie drew out, arms folding across her chest.
She let herself be handled when Faye nudged her upright and accepted the half-finished word search offered to her. Faye and Ruby shared a glance over Annie's head, the latter averting her gaze quickly when Beth turned back around.
The taut silence stretched for another moment until Faye shifted in her seat.
"We're all tired."Faye murmured with a gentle nod, sinking down with a sigh."I'm pretty sure I was snappy with Ruby earlier when she was showing off the snacks she brought."
"Nothing pretty sure about it."Ruby chimed in pointedly with elevated eyebrows."You bit my head off."
Faye elbowed Annie's side, sweeping a hand at Ruby as if to say see?.
"You did."Ruby insisted. She shrugged her shoulders."Just because I thought ahead. Right, Beth?"
Beth tore her eyes away from the road long enough to bob her head in agreement, white-knuckled grip gradually slacking on the steering wheel.
"There was some head biting."Beth concurred under Ruby's gaze."I did suggest that everyone bring along a snack in the group chat. It was under remembering to charge your phones."
"I did neither,"Annie confessed brightly. She then held up a proud, pointed finger."But I did have breakfast before we left."
"Does nobody read my checklists?"Beth asked on a quiet exhale as rolled her eyes heavenward."Despite what everybody thinks, okay, i actually work hard on them. Dean would just blank them too and then it'd be my fault when he forgot something."
Three pairs of eyes snapped to Beth, and their faces fell when the redhead went quiet.
"No, no, we appreciate them. And you."Faye hastily assured, reaching forward to touch Beth's shoulder."I was so drained last night I almost forgot to put my phone on charge until your list came through. And the snacks are on me. I was too busy deciding between a crossword and a word search."
Annie huffed out a scoff, rubbing her eyes with the heels of her hands. She glared down at the word search resentfully.
"You chose right."She said to Faye with a nod."I hate crosswords."
