CHAPTER ONE
The Parapet[ANNIE'S POV]
The Caddington Family is a very respected part of Navarre and has been eversince the Great War and since mankind started to ride dragons. All members of this family have been dragonriders, it was an unspoken rule as soon as you carry the Caddington name. The most famous amongst them was Captain Caddington. It isn't much known about him, due to the costume of burning the belongings of the dead, so information on his previous life, before becoming a war hero, alongside his name was lost. What was known is that he was Red Scorpiontail dragon, Lasari's first rider as she was only ten years old and very picky on her riders.
He had fought in the war against Poromiel for almost twenty years until being killed in battle, also leaving Lasari wounded, but unlike her rider, she survived. Pretty quickly afterwards, the female dragon bonded again, never staying riderless for more than a year. Despite the Captain's death, the Caddington name continue being constantly brought up throughout history. Most noteable was their cooperation with Basgiath and their dragon farm. There their dragons laid eggs and in heat boxes the eggs were hatched. The hatchlings stayed on the farm in Tyrrendor until they were fully grown and were able to bond with riders.
The last of our family, who had a dragon farm, were my grandparents and I spent most of my life there and so did my brother, when our parents happened to be called into battle at the same time. Together, we always used to watch the dragons from the distance and I wished to have one myself one day. After their death, Dad took care of the farm until the last dragon left it and than closed it, not having the time to run it himself. Our long history and connection with dragons caused the Caddingtons to call themselves dragons. Not necessarily literal, but we are known for being able to form stronger and more meaningful connections to dragons than we do to most humans. Even some outsiders called us that as well, but most people, like my mother, think this is nonsense and that our family simply grew to think to highly of themselves. I personally don't know what to think about that, but it surely has a ring to it and also helped me gain courage, whenever I doubted myself worthy of a dragon.
One thing I was always sure of was the fact that I wanted a dragon more than I wanted anything else. My father was the one to tell me that this has to wait a little while longer and until than I have to prepare myself. So, that's what I did. In order to make sure my dream comes true, I studied history all my life, as well being trained in combat. My parents supported me whenever they could, paving the way for my future, but I had to grow older to realise that my mother didn't just do it for me, but also for herself. Unlike my father, my mother never had a thrilling carreer and was mostly just known for her husband's famous last name. To be fair, my father had it easier. He grew up in a rider's family and already had an legacy, while my mother had to make a name for herself and also had a big set back, when she was pregnant twice first with me and than Eli.
