Adam took a large bite of his Ruben sandwich

Adam took a large bite of his Ruben sandwich. He wiped his chin with a napkin as he chewed. I poured some vinegar on my fries.

"Where were you last night?" Adam asked once he'd swallowed.

I reached for the pepper shaker. "Not sure you'd believe me if I told you."

"Now you have to—" Realization washed over Adam's face. He reached across the table and smacked my arm. "No way. You were with Harper last night?"

I nodded, unable to conceal my smile. "Yeah."

"All night?"

I kept nodding. "All night."

"So you fucked her then."

I cringed. "Please don't say that word. I only held her, but when we do that, it won't just be fucking."

Adam shrugged. "Alright. You two dating then?"

I picked up a fry and used it to poke the others. I didn't know the answer to Adam's question. I knew what I wanted to be, but I figured that was wishful thinking.

"I think we're still in the friends category." I bit the fry I was holding.

"Ah, yes!" Adam said dreamily, and I narrowed my eyes at him. "I hold all my friends while they sleep."

"You'd hold me if I needed it," I teased.

Adam cackled. "I'd hold you just to piss you off."

I threw a fry at him, and he barked another laugh before picking the fry off his lap and shoving it in his mouth.

He made a face. "Oh, man. How can you eat these like that?" He grabbed the ketchup bottle from the middle of the table and doused his fries in a thick layer. "I don't know how you do it, Spence. I think by now I'd be out."

"Says the man who stared after a certain friend of Piper's?" I raised a brow.

"I'm not waiting on her," Adam defended himself. "I'm not waiting on anyone. I've got nothing to offer long-term."

My mind wandered to our bathroom, where Adam's secret sat hidden behind an orange pill bottle. Every time I thought about it, my heart cracked a little more for my best friend. I knew what he wanted to give and the reality of it all.

"You're very skilled and handy."

Adam chuckled and shook his head. "Yes, what all women our age want."

"Come on. You've made things that fixed stuff in our apartment when the landlord took too long." I picked up another fry and took a bite. "No woman wants a broken showerhead."

Adam shook his head. "A shower and a—" He stopped, his eyes growing distant. His throat worked, and his eyebrows knit together. "Can we change the subject?"

"I saw Bram last night."

Adam's brows raised. "That's a definite topic change. Why?"

"I needed to hear it from him. I needed to know what this underground fighting is." I shook my head, no less confused than before I talked to him. "I always remember that fight we went to with Reed where someone broke their hand on the column. Something didn't sit right with Reed after that night, and when he talked to D, he told him to trust his gut."
