My hands were clammy as I tried to read her expression.
"Harper?"
She kept staring at me. Even though only seconds had passed, it felt like an eternity. I wanted her to say something– needed her to. I didn't even care if what she said was, 'fuck off.'
I ran my fingers through my hair. "Jesús [Jesus], please say something."
Harper pressed her lips together as she took a step toward me. I swallowed, my heart pounding against my chest with an almost unbearable force. Before I could say anything more, her arms were around me.
"Thank you," she whispered in my ear.
My body relaxed as my arms circled around her waist. I squeezed her tighter to me, grateful she wasn't mad. I breathed in her scent and enjoyed every microsecond of her feel.
She pulled away sooner than I wanted.
"Well, that was embarrassing." She looked down at her feet, but I could still see the tug of a smile on her lips.
"What was embarrassing?" I asked.
"Emotions."
She shuddered dramatically, and I laughed.
"So, Declan is really going to do something?" She looked at me again, her face more serious now.
"I'm not sure what he can do," I admitted, putting my hands in my pockets. "But he is looking for more information."
"Okay." Harper nodded in understanding. She looked over her shoulder and then back at me. "I was about to head out, you could"– She shrugged nervously– "Come with me."
"Where?"
"On my days off, I look for my sister, remember?"
I looked around. "Yeah, I remember." I gesture around us. "Here? In this part of town?"
"Of course. This is where she lived. It's where she worked. It's also where she disappeared. Someone around here has to know something."
Her logic was sound. I hated the idea of her walking around here alone. It worried me.
"I'll come."
"Great! Let me grab a couple of water bottles from the diner, and we can head out."
As Harper went back into the diner, I pulled out my phone and texted Adam.
Hey man.
Gonna skip lunch today.
Something came up. Sorry.I put my phone back in my pocket as Harper came out of the diner. She had two water bottles and a white paper bag with grease stains.
She handed me the bag. "Hungry?"
I took the bag. "How did you know?"
She shrugged. "It's early, and based on the news you shared, I figured you wouldn't have the stomach to eat before talking to me."
