I loved the feeling of Harper in my arms. We lazily kissed as my hands ran along the exposed back of her unzipped uniform.
"I need to get to work," Harper said against my lips.
"You will."
I captured her mouth again, my tongue entering her mouth. She let out a low moan as we tasted and explored each other.
Harper pulled away and narrowed her eyes at me. "You can't use your good kissing skills to distract me."
I chuckled as I ran my fingers through my hair.
"You're picking me up at two for my appointment, right?" she asked.
"Of course," I answered as I searched for my shoes.
"Good." Harper jumped as she tugged on the zipper of her uniform.
"You need help, babe?" I walked to her.
"Not if help means more kissing. I don't have time for that."
I laughed. "Turn around."
She turned and pulled her long curls over her shoulder. It was hard to resist kissing the exposed pale skin. I settled for running my finger along it.
Harper giggled. "Spence. Seriously. The zipper."
I kissed between her shoulder blades, then pulled the fabric together as tightly as possible while trying to pull the zipper up. It barely moved—maybe a quarter of an inch. I tried again, pulling the fabric even closer, but it went up maybe half an inch more than my last attempt.
"Is it going to work?" Harper asked.
"Maybe. If it does, it'll be slow going, and it might be uncomfortable for you." I attempted again, but this time nothing. "I'm sorry, babe."
Harper groaned. "Great. I guess I have to ask Dorothy for a new uniform."
I hated how dejected she looked as she stepped out of the polyester nightmare Dorothy forced her to wear and into a pair of sweats. She pulled on an oversized t-shirt and then moved toward the door. I stopped her, taking her hands in mine.
"These changes are good. They mean the baby is growing."
"I know I just... I constantly feel like a burden. I keep needing things from people, and I'm not normally like that."
"We all need things sometimes. And besides, people need new uniforms all the time for non-pregnancy reasons."
Harper rolled her eyes and pulled her hands from mine. "You don't get it."
She walked to the door.
"Baby."
"I'll see you later."
The door closed with a slam, and I dropped my head. I blew out a long breath before grabbing my wallet and phone off the counter. I looked down and saw a text from Reed.
