Birds sounded and heat blasted onto his sweaty head. Voices sounded around him. Laughing, yelling and some whispers. When the light struck his eyes he raised his hand to block the rays. He was more confused than ever.
Seconds later his vision adjusted and he could see. There were boys everywhere, huddling around above him. One particular boy stood in front yelling at the others. When his eyes darted down he pounced down with great force. His ,thick with mud, boots hit the bottom causing the cadge to creak and sway slightly.
'Damn well greenie. Rise and shine.' He said. Before he even knew what was happening he felt himself being hurled up onto the grass, laughs escaped the boys mouths. He quickly got to his feet and ran. His legs taking his body, but not his mind, away. His heart literally pounded in his head; beating so loud he couldn't even hear the roars coming from the remaining guys. Thy were like lions preying on him, waiting for the perfect time to attack. 'We got a runner!' One screeched.
He could feel his feet slip and gravity failed him. He felt his head hit the ground with force. The pain was quick and sharp. No blood escaped but the dry mud glued to his forehead.
Hands grabbed him and hulled him away, God knows where to. He couldn't care. It was all to much. His ears were bleeding silence. Everything became a buzz and a sharp ringing made its way to him.
They left him in a cell looking out over the open area. It was covered in thick sticks, leaves and bamboo. The floor was made of concrete and was painful to sit on. The loneliness and isolation of it made him feel utter emptiness and dread. It cut him off from the outside world. He was an animal in a cadge waiting. Waiting.
Suddenly a kid, aged about eighteen, came along. He stuck his hand on the bars of the door. 'Your not going to run again!' He ordered. His voice was sharp and gave no reassurance. He nodded innocently.
'I can't remember anything,' he let out, his voice shaking slightly. He could hear this other guy speak but he couldn't process it. He just kept dwelling on the fact his life was going to change and it was uncertain if it would be for the better.
The door was opened and the guy who was called Alby offered his hand for help.
He was lead to a tree and he met a guy called Newt on the way. He had a strong British accent and a soft hearted face giving him the only comfort he had since he had gotten there. Something in him felt daunted by the hight of the tree but he climbed up onto the landing. It overlooked the whole open area. It was illuminated with green grass and trees which over swept almost every inch of ground. Alby was talking but the beauty of the place was a distraction in itself it was only when he was explaining the rules did he listen.
' We only have three rules. Rule one do your part, there is no time for free loaders, rule two never harm another glader, we need trust, and most importantly never go beyond those walls! You understand me? 'He pointed to the dark grey walls made of solid metal. Vines crept up the edge but not high enough to climb. There was something about it which gave him a feeling of curiosity laced his pitch black fear.
'Hey Alby?' A young voice called out. Alby looked down making him look down too. On the grass at the bottom was a kid, younger than any others. He was a little porky with red cheeks and brown curly hair which were neatly springing from his head. 'Hey chuck. How you doing man?' he yelled as the boy waved.
He stared out at the walls. They were so out of place. It made him feel like he was constantly being watched.
'It's the same story for all of us,' chuck explained as he tugged at the hammock he was trying to put up. It was made of what looked like dirt rages but it would have to do for him. 'We wake up in the box, Alby gives us the tour then here we are,' he sighed. Quickly he leans up. His hazel eyes still stuck to the walls. 'Don't worry you did better than I did. I klunked my pants three times before they got me out of the pit,' by the time he had finished the other was gone. Walking through the glade getting closer and closer to the entrance of the forbidden place. Chuck ran as fast as his little legs would allow him. ''Dude where are you going?'
'I just want to see,'
'You can look around all you want but you better not go in there!' He cried.
'Why not? What's through there?' He asked more curious than ever to know what lurked behind the walls. What secrets it held.
'I don't know I just know what I am told, we're not supposed to leave.' They stopped and both boys let out a deep sigh. He walked closer and as he did two boys came out.
'Hey Chuck. New greenbie,' the boy with dark brown hair said as he jogged past.
'I thought you said no one was allowed out there?' Confusion pilled on along with the questions which nagged at him.
'I said we're not allowed out there. They can they're runners. They go into the maze,'
'Maze? I thought you said you didn't know what is out there,' Chucks eyes showed panic. The words slipped out and now he had the answer for it. He was caught out but the other ignored the his little attempts to justifying what he had said. Instead, walked closer to the opening.
It was like a never ending repeat. He was hit to floor once again and he felt the daysharvoo. 'We really need to stop meeting like this,' the creepy boy with the un-natural eyebrows muttered.
Anger rushed through his body. His head was exploding and all he wanted to do was has hit the bastard. He quickly scrambled to his feet.
'Hey calm, calm, calm!' He yelled causing more to come over to stop the commotion. Calm down. First he hits him and then he expects him to calm down. 'Just relax,'
Despite the yells he couldn't hear all he could hear is the drums pounding in his ears.
'What the hell is wrong with you guys' he yelled as more joined. They were all insane he kept thinking. They were fussing over nothing and shouting at him like he had done something evil even though he had just been knocked to the ground for no reason.
He couldn't understand why they wouldn't let him leave. The looks they gave him indicated what they thought. Every pair of eyes looked at him as if he was the crazy one.
Suddenly Newt ran up to him. Holding his hand out as if to signal everything was ok.
'Just calm down okay!' His strong British accent sounded through. No, he would not calm down.
'Why should I?' He thought. In a matter of hours he had woken up in a cadge, small enough to give someone with claustrophobia a panic attack. He had also forgotten his whole life story, met a number of guys telling him it was okay. He was told not do something which could result in his freedom and now he was told to calm down because he was angry they were denying that chance for him to escape.
'No. Why won't you tell me what's out there?' Alby rushed forward
'Were trying to protect you man!' His words had no affect on him. He wanted to know what the hell was going on.
'It's for your own good,' Newt put in.
'No you guys can't just keep me here,' he didn't want to stay here. He needed to escape
'We can't let you leave,'
'Why not?' He bellowed. Before Alby could answer a creak came from behind. A groan echoed through the walls and shook his bones. He slowly tuned and a wind picked up blowing leaves and dust. His eyes squinted. Slowly they started to close and before he knew it the doors were shut completely. Without warning they had just cut him off. It was as if they were a person, a prison guard. A sand cloud hovered as the only reminder of what had just happened.
Most of the boys started to leave. 'Next time I'm gonna let you leave.'
He stood there not knowing what to think. What would have happened if he had ran out? The thought was terrifying but it didn't stop him from wanting to go out there and look himself.
'Welcome to glade,' Alby calmly said as he left.
