Chapter 39

Danielle slowly went down the stairs. She looked around the living room. There was no one.

Danielle walked to the kitchen, taking out a green apple from the fridge. She washed it and started to bring it back upstairs to eat it in her room.

She didn’t know why, but recently, she just liked to eat sour foods. Eating it makes her head hurt less. As she went upstairs, she heard the baby crying.

No one was at home at that time. Stephanie, her little sister is at school, and her mom, Danielle didn’t remember where she went. Her mother had told her before she went where she was going but now Danielle has forgotten where.

Danielle peeked into the baby’s room.

He was in a cradle. And he was crying ever so loudly.

Danielle has never touched him or held him. She hesitated to go inside the room, but the baby was crying so sadly Danielle couldn’t bear it.

She went inside slowly and tiptoed towards the cradle that was in the middle of the room.

Danielle peered inside the cradle. The baby was crying and squirming like a worm. Danielle smiled. He was so cute. His cheeks were a deep shade of pink.

Danielle held out her hands to pick him up and hesitated again. She has never held him. What if something bad happens?

But a strong force in her heart told her to pick him up.

Danielle picked him up slowly, cradling him in her arms for the first time.

Immediately, he stopped crying. He stared up into Danielle's eyes.

“Hello little guy.” Danielle smiled.

The baby smiled.

“Do you like me little guy? Do you miss your mother?” Danielle asked him. “Well, be patient okay because I promise you that you will get to meet your mother as soon as possible, okay?”

The baby smiled. Danielle sat down on a sofa nearby.

“Do you like that?” Danielle asked him. She smiled. She always loved little children, especially babies.”Your mother has work at London and she’ll be back soon. When she comes back, she’ll buy you a nice new toy for you to play with, okay?”

Suddenly the baby yawned.

“Are you sleepy little guy?” Danielle looked at him. “Do you want me to sing you a lullaby? But I don’t know much lullabies…”

Suddenly, the tune went through her mind again. Danielle hummed the tune out loud. Not long after that, the baby fell asleep.

His smile reminds me of someone, thoughtDanielle. My heart pounds fast when I’m holding him, like the time when I looked at the man in the picture in my room.

Suddenly, a tear fell down her eyes.

“Huh?” Danielle wiped the tear. Another tear rolled down her cheek. All of a sudden, she was crying so awfully. Tears by tears started to rain down her eyes.

Danielle put the baby down and ran into her room. She laid face down on her bed and cried her heart out, not knowing the reason why. There is something about the baby that Charlotte isn’t telling her. She needs to find it out.

Danielle closed her eyes and went to sleep.
