"Allright, where's Amelia?" Lyla asked.
Tessa shrugged. "Think we scared her off?"
Everyone looked at Leo expectantly. He groaned. "Why am I always the one to chase after the suspects?" he grumbled.
Lyla went over and gave him a playful punch in the arm. "Because you're the oldest. And fastest."
Leo sagged. "Ugh, fine."
He jogged off into the crowd of eager students wanting to get on the bus or home. They watched until he was out of sight before starting a conversation.
"So how'd class go, Tess?" Lyla asked. "Sophie?" The last part addressing the taller, dark-haired girl behind them.
Tessa mumbled 'bad' the same time Sophie said 'good'. Lyla laughed.
"Shouldn't have asked," Lyla chuckled. "I knew the answer already."
There was a pause for a minute. Lyla decided to speak up again.
"What do you guys make of Amelia?" she asked.
There was another pause."I think she could actually be the one," Sophie said. "By the way she acts in class. She's super awkward and shy and doesn't know how to talk to people without seeming like she's hiding something."
"Maybe she is hiding something," Tessa pointed out. "Like her real relatives."
Sophie glared at her and continued. "And she's definitely never been to school before."
Tessa let out a dreamy sigh. "Lucky."
Sophie rolled her eyes and gave Tessa a hard smack on the head. "She still had homework."
Tessa slumped, rubbing her head where Sophie had smacked her. "Oh, never mind then."
There was another silence. There seemed tobe a lot of those right now.
"I really don't want to go to Ronin's again," Lyla said finally, changing the subject. "We've already thought this about a lot of people and had to get the stupid brainwash tea that he sells for an outrageous price. Ugh."
"I know!" Tessa agreed. Then casting a mischievous smile in Sophie's direction. Her voice took on a ridiculous tone as she said, "But Sophie thinks otherwise."
Sophie smacked her again. "I do not!"
"She must see her beloved," Tessa continued in that high pitched, hilarious voice.
"Tessa," Sophie said angrily. "I've told you!"
Tessa started doing a wiggled dance as Sophie tried to smack her again. She danced out of the way and started to wave her hips, getting a few strange look from students who were leaving.
"You've told me, yeah," Tessa said, continuing to dance. "But it doesn't mean it's the truth."
Lyla chuckled. "She's got a point."
Sophie let out a frustrated growl as Tessa proceeded to sing.
"Sophie and Coyote sittin' in a tree, gettin' all K-I-"
"Stop it!" Sophie yelled. Then seeing all the students looking at them, she lowered her voice. "There's Leo with Amelia."
All heads turned over to where Leo was coming toward them with Amelia in front of him. He was practically pushing her over to them. Lyla felt a pang of sympathy and excitement at the same time. She felt bad for dragging Amelia into this but also excited because Amelia seemed like she had something to hide.
