Spencer's POV
It was the first Saturday of Summer and Ryan wanted to go to the beach with Parker, but I said I wanted to stay home.
All I could think about was yesterday and what Max had said to me. When she said it, I felt like I had been punched in the stomach. I didn't know that she knew about Amanda and I.
I got up and went downstairs and saw Mrs. Adams making breakfast.
"Good morning Spencer, pancakes?"
"Yes please." I said plopping down on my chair.
"Why so glum honey?" she asked sitting down in front of me with a plate of blueberry pancakes.
"Nothing, really." I said looking down at my pancakes.
"Okay, well if you wanna talk, you can talk to me. Okay?"
I nodded in agreement and went on eating my pancakes. I cannot have feelings for Max, she's just not my type. Or is she? No. Amanda is my type.
I was thinking about sending her a text, but then I decided against it because she probably hates me now even more than she did before.
Max's POV
I went to volleyball practice at school. I wanted to and needed to because that's the only thing that can push every other thought out of my head.
"Hey Coach, can we have an extra hour of practice today please?" I begged coach Sheila because there was no way I was gonna go home and just lay there.
"Yeah, we need to stay in shape for next season."
So we practiced for three hours and I couldn't have felt better.
~~~
"So how are we gonna start off our summer?" Alex asked.
She was spending the night at my house and we were listening to music on her phone.
"I have no-"
Then my phone buzzed.
"Who's that?" Alex asked trying to grab my phone.
"I cant fucking believe it."
It was Spencer.
Hey, look, I'm really sorry about yesterday. I shouldn't have let Amanda talk to you like that. Let me make it up to you?
"He cant actually be serious right?" I asked Alex who kept reading the message over and over again.
"He is! Dude you have to respond to him!"
"Okay, no problem I will."
Look Spencer, don't text me again okay? I don't need your little apology. No need to make anything up to me. Cool? Cool.
"Damn Max, why so harsh?" Alex asked me.
"Look, he's a douche so he gets treated like one. It's as simple as that."
"Max, why do you have to shut everyone out of your life? Why can't you let anyone in?"
"I do let people in, you, Hannah, and my brother. Trust me, that's enough."
"Whatever. So, Froyo?" Alex said standing up and getting her keys.
"Sure, let me just get my wallet."
When I got back, I looked at my phone and saw another message from Spencer.
Max, I'm really sorry. Please? If you don't want me to, I won't take you out anywhere. Just please meet up with me so I can at least explain to you?
I texted him back.
You know what? Fine. Meet me at the Froyo parking lot in 10 minutes.
What the hell was I doing?
~~~
When we got to Froyo, I saw Spencer's black Range Rover in the parking lot.
"Hey, I'm gonna go talk to Spencer and I'll meet you inside in about 15. Cool?" I told Alex who started getting out of the car.
"Yeah. But if you need me, just text me, or scream, you know whatever." She said jokingly.
I stood outside Spencer's car and he motioned me to come inside. I stood there with my arms crossed and he opened the car door from the inside.
"Please Max?" he said.
I stepped inside and closed the door with a slam.
"Okay," he said "Max I'm really truly sorry."
"Okay. Is that all? Can I leave now?"
"Come on Max, for real."
"I am being real. I have nothing to say to you anymore."
"Look, I know Amanda shouldn't have said that, but she was just drunk."
"Listen, little prince, I know you're her boyfriend and your job is to defend her and all, but trust me, she was not drunk. She was sober and you wouldn't know unless you've been her target for years. She talks to me like that on a daily basis, so don't assume things you don't know are true."
"I'm not her boyfriend. I mean I am her boyfriend, but-"
"Let's be real, you're her fuckfriend, but that's your business and not mine. So if you don't mind, have a good summer you asshat."
As I reached for the door handle he grabbed my arm and pulled me close, too close if I might add. He was so close to me, I could see the green rim around his eyes.
We were both looking at each other and not saying a word, until yours truly pulled away.
Spencer's POV
She pulled away.
Why did she pull away?
"What?" she asked looking out the window.
"It's not like that Max, and you know that."
"Actually," she said laughing "it is like that and it's because I do know."
I wanted to tell her that Amanda meant nothing to me, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.
We were so close before, it felt good. It felt familiar, but I had just met Max.
"Look, I just wanted to tell you that I'm really sorry." I finally said and she turned her head so fast, I got scared.
"Spencer, what do you not understand about me not caring about your apology? I know you want to apologize to me because I'm a little girl who gets bullied and doesn't have that many friends. But the thing is, I don't have that many friends because I don't need them."
I had no response to that. But she was so angry and I could tell in her eyes that she was hurting. I wanted to help her.
I moved forward and looked at her straight in the eye and said, "That, Max, is not true. I don't think of you as a weak girl, hell you're probably the strongest and baddest girl I know."
And then I went for it, I kissed her.
I barely knew this girl and I was kissing her, what is wrong with me?
At first, it was just me, but she kissed back.
Wait, Max, the badass, kissed me back? This is more confusing than Physics.
When she pulled away, we were both breathing hard, but Max's eyes went from sincere to angry real quick. Then I felt it even more.
She slapped me so hard, it was burning. And just like that, she opened the door and went running inside Froyo.
I rested my head against the steering wheel and tried to process what the hell just happened. I just kissed Max.
Damn, I'm in trouble.
