Chapter 5 - Counting

As I sat at the dinner table, I looked up at my mother and stepfather. In my head, I was debating if I should tell them about my rash decision. I looked over at my little brother and wondering how he would feel when I leave. I continue thinking about my decision while playing with my food on my plate.

"So anything new, JJ" I looked up from my food and just nodded my head to my mother. My stepfather looked at my with his right eyebrow raised with curiosity.

"Well Ja, tell us" My father figured muttered with a hint of demanding tone. I gulped, and I could feel my hand begin to become clammy from the intense sweat.

"Well... I sort of joined the Marines" I rushed out in fear of their reaction. My father's face was blank. My mother seemed that she had tears that wanted to slip.

I stood up and left the table. The reaction was something I expected but it still hurt me to know that I was leaving my family behind so that I can run from my problems. I opened the door to my room and closed it ever so gently. I grabbed my bag, packed it with the list of items that I would need for basic. As I finished packing I set next to my door. I went to my closet to take my outfit out for the next day for class but I was interrupted by a knock. I muttered a come in and I looked at the door and it was my step dad.

"So uh, you leaving?" I looked at him and it seemed he was crying. I just nodded.

"Well, Me and your mother can't stop you since you are eighteen now. Just know we are always here and our door is always open for you JJ. I know I don't say this a lot but I love you kid, you might not be mine but I truly love you like you are mine." He never expressed his love for me, it was always just kind of known. Before I could say anything, his muscular arms wrapped around me. His head on my shoulder, my shirt was soaked from his tears but I didn't mind. I reciprocated the hug.

"I love you, too pops" I expressed with a small smile across my lips.

-----

As I got ready for the morning, I had received a call from the recruitment office.

Mr. Valentine

Yes?

We have an appointment for you to come and finish the progress, would you like to take the available appointment?

I nodded my head like an idiot.

Mr. Valentine?

Uh sorry, Master Sargent. I will like to take that appointment.

Ok. The appointment is set for tomorrow at 4:30 pm. Bring a pen with ya!

Yes, sir. And thank you again.

The call went dead and I carried out my days. I signed the contracted for 0311. Marine Infantry. I was counting down the day until I leave this dreadful town for the military.
