Luke closed his eyes. He felt a tingling sensation in his head. He couldn't put a finger on what it was though. He literally couldn't. The pain of the Frisbee that hit him overwhelmed his brain. Whoever or whatever was on his face just distracted him. Slowly, he opened his eyes.
He must have fallen in pain because he did not expect to see people above him. There were four pairs of eyes looking back at his own. He could only identify two of them. Calum, with brown eyes the color of the brown wood on his favorite guitar. And Emma, whose eyes were so deep that they made him feel like he was drowning, but drowning in a good way. If that was even possible.
"You okay, Luke?"
"I'm so sorry!!"
"Tough it out, nerd."
The last comment was obviously Calum's. Only he would be upset that girls were paying attention to Luke and not him at a time like this. Luke felt like Mario had eaten a mushroom and punched his gut multiple times. Girls weren't on the top of his priority list right now.
"There's a caterpillar crawling on your forehead," the fourth, and unknown, person said. This caused Luke to give a little squeal, jump in the air, and flail his arms around while screaming. To him, spiders were nothing. Caterpillars were a completely different story though.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
They were small, fat, furry creatures. In spring it was hard to tell the difference between a caterpillar on a leaf and a normal leaf. When he walked home from school or Calum's they'd fall from the trees and land on him. Some people would brush it off, but Luke had had one too many scarring memories.
Often times in the early spring, Luke would take long walk around the town. He'd wear his black hooded jacket and listen to music through his ear buds and just completely zone out. Caterpillars that fell off the trees would fall into his hood and eventually die there. Luke never noticed this, partially because he never liked to wash his black jacket, well he never liked to wash anything in all honesty. One day, when it was raining, Luke had no other way home from Calum's other than walking. As he was closing the door he put his hood up and let out the loudest scream. It was raining caterpillars on him and ever since then, he'd dreaded caterpillars.
This didn't just happen to him once. After that incident, Luke always checked his hood for caterpillars. Every once in a while he'd forget and they'd rain down upon him. This happened at a dinner with his family. Luke's entire family made fun of him for weeks and weeks. The embarrassment of the whole ordeal completely killed him.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
"It's off of your face now," a girl with glasses pointed out like it was the most obvious thing in the world. She wore black square glasses and had short hair that framed her face. Luke thought she looked like Raven from Teen Titans.
"Sorry about my friend," Emma said, "She didn't mean to throw the Frisbee at you." The look on Emma's face showed that she was sincerely sorry about it.
"It's okay."
"This is Sam," Emma explained while pointing to the girl that looked like Raven and had apparently thrown a Frisbee at him, "I guess you already know Calum, and this is Lucy." Luke looked over at Lucy. She looked a lot like Sam, except she looked a lot happier and her hair was longer.
Everything about this situation confused Luke.
