«Kailani»
It took me some time to get here.
It took time to all of us.
We got here at the cost of so many tears, effort, even bodies and deaths so we can be at the top, in the triumph of our freedom.
The cry of all my people is all the spiritual and energetic strength I now have, and it's all I need to shout for them, for us, for everyone...
We won...
We really.., won...
Tears run down my cheeks, I can't believe after so much time we.., we really got here. The arms of all my allies, my mates and my friends hug me back, so tight, even though none of course has the strength to do it as hard as we'd like.
We need to rest.
We need it after so many days.
"Lani, come on, gotta go to the base."
"Yeah" I respond, nodding, letting him wipe away my tears, like every time I shed those in the past for a battle, knowing this may be the last one...
So, as soon as my favorite Puerto Rican in the whole world announces to everyone they can celebrate as much as they want, we can go.
"Do you remember what you said we'd do as soon as we get free, flaca?"
I chuckle, I throw myself to a hug on his arms. "You'd cook for me the most delicious meal of your district."
It was so hard, for so many times in the past to see Sero's face, here with me, fighting a battle that... although inside me I knew was his too.., sometimes I just couldn't help but to feel that his heart was in another home: in.., Japan...
I mean... it was my home once too...
It hurt to see him and remember what happened, it hurt to know what he left because I left that too, it hurt to have him by my side when I knew he should be next to someone else.
But we all decide the path we want to take.
I knew that, since so long ago, even if it was at the cost of a broken heart.
And I make sure of it now, when I see them there, far away.
Those same two men who were my home once in the past.
My heart hurts as much as the first and last time I saw them here, in my nation, trying to be the help all my people needed.
But.., just like that time... I will have to leave.
"You okay, Lani?"
"Yeah..." I murmur, nodding to Mateo: he knows where exactly I'm looking at, and that's precisely why he puts his body in the middle, so that I can't see.
"Let's go cure all that mess, okay?"
"Ok." I murmur. "Let's go home."
With that, he turns around to give one last look back.
He sees them, there, standing and looking right at here.
And that is why he comes back to me, to place a small kiss on my lips.
"Let's go home."
He takes my hand, I take Sero's, and he takes the next person's hand in a chain, waiting for our entire team to, in a single second, go to have that rest we all need.
I saw Izuku Midoriya and Katsuki Bakugo for the last time two years ago.
Two whole years, where they, as foreigners, were forced to leave the country when that was the condition of the government to give Luca back to us.
Now that the last District was taken, the Government Palace collapsed and the last Leader on the list ceded his power with that signature, they could return to help us out in the last mission we had: take down the last cage.
This is the first time I've seen them after those two whole years.
I don't know why they've come.
I don't know when they'll go back.
I don't know if they even think on staying.
I just know...
That this is not their place.
If they're here, for whatever their reasons.., they must be clear on something: this is not their country; this is another place.
This is my home.
And it will be for as long as I live. Nothing and no one will force me to leave ever again.
