Today was the day. The day to see if you were able to produce a Patronus and in front of the classroom. It was chaotic and hectic and busy. The room was filled up in a mass of silver mist. The marauders were in the back laughing and chilling because they mastered their Patronuses easily. They already know what form happiness is going to take for them, they know their souls, and they've had good times.

Soon the professor has them go up one by one and try to cast the spell in front of the class. Some of them get mist and some get animals. Lily gets a little crease on her forehead in full concentration and out blossoms this beautiful, shining white doe.

James' jaw drops.

All the marauders are staring at him and he's staring at lily. When it's James' turn to go up, he's all nervous and shaky. He looks at lily and he knows it would just humiliate her. So James asks if he can do it after class.

Lily got curious and suspicious about James-perfect-grades-in-defense-against-dark-arts-Potter who is always bending the rules. What is he hiding anyway? She stayed behind and peeps through the classroom door.

James cast this wonderful, dignified stag that gracefully canters around the room, glowing softly. The professor gives him full marks and let's him go.

Lily has her heart in her mouth and she realizes that not only are their Patronuses and pair, but that James didn't want to push that fact onto her in front of everyone because he didn't want to embarrass her.
