The last thing I do for the night is take the trash bags out.
"Goodnight, Katie," Igor chirps, bouncing up and down on the stand in his cage.
"Goodnight, Igor," I reply, locking the clinic door behind me. I would keep him in my apartment if my building allowed pets and I had the funds to take care of him. One day, I hope to be able to give him a real home.
The night wraps around me, with a chill in the air as I still face the impending bike ride home. No visible breath, but it's cold enough to hasten my pace. I drag the trash bags over to the dumpster and toss them up before hearing the sound of a can being kicked behind me. With a quick spin, I find myself face-to-face with a dark figure lurking in the shadows.
I gasp and back away until my back is pressed to the front of the dumpster. The figure approaches closer, coming into the light, and I can now see his face.
Kyte.
I sigh with relief. "Oh my gosh," I say, regaining my breath. "You scared the hell out of me. Again,"
"Sorry," he apologizes, his brooding eyes darkening in the harsh light.
"What are you doing here? If you came to ask me to join your group again, my mind hasn't changed,"
"No," he responds curtly.
"Then why are you here?"
He steps closer to me, his smile fading.
"I'm sorry, Kate, but "no" can't be an option,"
My brows furrow in confusion. "What's that supposed to mean?"
He pulls a cloth bag from his pocket. "It means I'm no longer asking, so you can either come with me on your own or I can force you to."
I let out a hesitant laugh, unsure if he is serious. "Are you joking? Because it's not funny,"
He shakes his long face and says, "Sorry, I'm not really known for humor."
I slowly inch my feet back toward the clinic.
"Don't make this hard," he warns, stepping for me.
I sprint for the door, but he grabs me by my wrist, yanking me into the stronghold of his chest. My scream is muffled by his mitt-sized hand. His breath grazes my temple.
"Don't make me hurt you," he warns, retracting his hand from my mouth.
He ensnares both of my wrists to his chest, wrapping an iron-infused rope around them.
"I'm sorry," he murmurs, veiling my world with darkness as he pulls the bag over my head.
