Ring ring. The phone began to ring. Darry was sitting on the armchair, reading the newspaper, then got up to get the phone.
"Hello?" Darry asked.
"Hi, is this Darrel Curtis?" A female voice asked on the other end of the receiver.
"Yes, ma'am."
"We were calling to let you know about Jonathan Cade. We tried to contact his family, but he refused to tell them. He asked to call you. We wanted to let you know that he is ready to be released."
Darry couldn't contain his happiness. He smiled so big, a smile no one in the gang, not even his parents saw. "That's great! We're on the way," and slammed the phone back onto the wall. He ran down the hall, banging on Ponyboy and Soda's doors.
"Get your asses out here! Johnny is getting released!"
Ponyboy rushed out, slamming the door behind him. "Are you serious?"
"Yeah! Come on!" Darry declared, dragging Pony and Soda out. They were all smiling like crazy. They thought they would surprise the rest of the gang later with Johnny home.
The drive to the hospital wasn't long, nor was it bad. Darry did go over the speed limit a bit, but he didn't mind.
Darry ran up to the front counter. "We're here for Jonathan Cade," Darry said, literally almost jumping up and down. After 8 months in surgery and recovery, he could finally see the gang again.
"Room 326. They're preparing hi-, " the nurse tried to finish before they were all the way down the hall.
Soda opened the door. "Johnny!" The Curtis brothers exclaimed in excitement. Johnny looked at them and couldn't help himself but smile so big that a few tears left his eyes. So did all three of the brothers.
