#1: Surprise, surprise

"And the lucky person who will be attending Coral View Academy is... Alyssa Parker. Congratulations."

Coral View Academy was a prestigious school that welcomed only the most intellectual students who came from wealthy families into its gates. The school authorities adhered to strict regulations concerning their intake of students so as to uphold their reputation as one of the top academies in the country. They made sure that all of their students passed their notorious entrance test with nothing below a B grade, which was considerably difficult to attain considering the level of difficulty the Academy's papers were set at.

However, they did allow for one minor exception. The Academy held a ballot on a yearly basis, allowing one, and only one student who had entered the ballot, to become a member of the Academy. To many teenagers around the country, this was no doubt seen as a golden opportunity, one that held the power to change their lives. If they were lucky enough to be selected, they would have the privilege to learn in a conducive environment with access to fully-equipped laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment, attend lessons taught by the most inspiring of teachers and mingle amongst students of the highest calibre, be it with regard to wealth, social standing or brains.

Alyssa Parker, otherwise known as Aly, was none other than what others commonly labelled a 'geek'. Or 'nerd', if you'd prefer. She attended a high school in her neighbourhood and was a socially awkward girl who didn't quite know how to do anything except bury her head in books. That pretty much explained how she consistently managed to attain stellar grades in school. Aly was perfectly content with her well, perhaps slightly boring life and didn't care a single bit when she heard that the results of the 'Coral View Ballot' were being announced over the radio. Well of course, she hadn't been bothered to apply for the ballot in the first place. Or had she?

"And the lucky person who will be attending Coral View Academy is... Alyssa Parker. Congratulations."

The instant Aly realised that her name had been called out over the radio, she jerked right awake. "What did I just hear? This can't be happening... Bern! Did they just say that I've been selected to attend Coral View Academy? I didn't even apply for the ballot!"

Her sister, Bernessa, cringed in response to Alyssa's overreaction. "Well... Your amazing sister over here applied for it on your behalf since I was applying for it too. I didn't expect that you'd really be selected. But hey, this is a life-changing opportunity! Hundreds and thousands of teenagers across the country would die to be in your position right now."

Alyssa let out a groan and looked away, still having trouble digesting the news. Sure, there were countless teenagers out there who wished for nothing else but to be able to attend Coral View. After all, it was an outrageously well-known school that provided its students with plenty of opportunities to further their horizons and try new things. It was also famous for having successfully groomed a fair number of their students to be the top dogs in the respective industries they had chosen to venture into.

But was Aly prepared for all of this? Even after several moments of contemplation, she was still unable to believe that she had really been selected to attend the Academy.

She knew that her parents would definitely be supportive of her if she decided to go ahead since they thought that their children's education was of utmost importance, and knew it was a determining factor that would pave their children's future path when they went into the working world.

But Aly was also aware that she would have no choice but to move away from everybody and everything she knew since Coral View Academy was located at the other end of the country, far away from her current home. She would be forced to live in the school dormitories, along with one of the many snobbish brats around. And that was something that Aly was not looking forward to.
