If you don't know, step one to "Coming Out" is coming out to yourself. In other words accepting who you are. Which if you never had to face any adversity for being different, might sound absurd, but trust me it isn't. When met with people like you, people like me tend to shy away and feel less confident and worthy. You might be wondering why? And to this I respond with this: put yourself in my shoes, and imagine what being berated with negative comment after negative comment feels like. After a while this tends to get to you. And if you're anything like me you start to anticipate it and shut off from the world and put on an angry face to stop people from bothering you. You end up an outcast.

This is why feeling confident in oneself is absolute key to accepting yourself.

Step two to coming out you might be thinking is to tell everybody you know about yourself. But no sir, madam, or other, first you must surround yourself with people caring and trusting. This step is meant to encourage a healthy and nurturing environment where you don't have to feel pressured into fitting into a certain societal mold.

Now, step 3 to coming out is to make sure you are prepared for potential eventualities. I've heard stories where queer folk have been kicked out or worse yet abused. This is why step 2 is vital, it helps you ascertain who you can come to in a time of need. It might be difficult to find trusting and tolerant friends but you can seek out LGBT groups, like GSA and other safe places. And it's important to note that sometimes you might want to be financially independent before you come out to your parents

Step 4 is to acknowledge the differences between being scared to come out and being scared of being out. By this I mean that when you're on the verge of telling anyone and you feel like your hearts going to jump out of your chest, know that that is perfectly normal, because it isn't easy admitting to anyone that your different in any capacity.
