New Years eve, everyone's happy for the beginning of a new year, if only I were in charge of Star Wars. Dear Lord let at least someone who cares about the Luca's creation and doesn't want to throw away all the EU be in charge.
People would be over soon; he got up and went to prepare some popcorn. A smile came to his face as he looked forward to spending time with friends and a mysterious out of town guest.
The people started to arrive, and he moved toward the fireplace. The logs already in, just waiting to be lit. Why are you smiling Rob, what do you know?
Rob could you come here for a moment? What are you happy about?
Just that your life may be about to change, my friend from LA that has seen your work would like to talk to you. And no, I'm not telling you why. After lighting the fire now that guests were here, he made his way over to the mystery man.
Call me Pete, nice to meet you in person. Rob tells me you're a fan of Star Wars. When did you become a fan?
My dad showed me the movies but, I didn't learn much about the EU until the run up to Force Awakens. Wanted to know about key events and people so I wouldn't be lost during the sequel trilogy. I knew there would probably be a few retcons and was okay with it, but I had no idea what was coming.
Given you're a writer do you have ideas about what the canon should have looked like when Disney took over?
I'd say on the conservative side there are six or so books that should have been kept canon. When I thought about it that list would expand to around two dozen, I had the power to say and others not specifically on the list assumed to happen unless mentioned.
What would be some of the titles in this Universal Canon?
I'd start with books that explained things from the movies and characters. The Darth Bane trilogy comes to mind since he came up with the "Rule of Two". Kenobi would be another. A third would be Outbound Flight.
I've heard you have rules for writing, what are they?
I have rules I right by. One is character advance on their merits and not because other characters are made to look incompetent. Two understand the character so they never behave out of character. Three use a new character if you want to tell a new story. Four understand implied lore when writing, defined as things assumed to be true unless stated otherwise. The fifth and final rule is stay true to fundamental lore like how Hyperdrives where invented in Star Wars. Characters not crossing paths for stated reasons like Kenobi not being near Leia. They should have called it Dark Disciple instead of Kenobi and that would have allowed a story with Leia without contradicting lore.
Would there be any books that you would want to be part of the unified canon post Return of the Jedi?
The book's I'd keep canon would be Rogue Squadron, Rogue Squadron: Wedge's Gamble since it covers the liberation of Coruscant. And maybe also the two following books The Kryto's Trap and The Bacta War. I think it goes without saying that the Thrawn trilogy would be part of the canon with The Truce at Bakura. From this point as far as, main events are concerned there would be a point of divergence. The Desney Timeline would start here. The other would lead to the next event in the EU, Jedi Academy though Legacy of the Force and Fate of the Jedi.
What Disney books would be in the running of UC?
Aftermath Trilogy, Bloodlines. There would be others, like Rogue one.
Interesting that you say Bloodlines, as it sets up the First Order and Resistance conflict? What about episodes 7-9?
For a while I only wanted to uncanonize 8&9 then I realized that it was three characters and not the plot I cared about. It probably would be best to start over and uncanonize 7 also. That would open the way for more of the EU to be included. I don't want to erase everything Disney did. There are other books from the EU that could be included, but I'd start with main timeline events and things that explain the world of the movies. It wouldn't be easy, but I'd like as a fan to do it justice. It was a mistake to throughout the entire EU. Parts were brought back in, but others not and the reasoning didn't make sense. What brings you here tonight?
I'm a fellow fan and I'm looking for people to help right the ship and your short story collection brought you to my attention. Would you want to be part of the Team?
I'd be honored. Turning everyone was looking at them, smiles as if the party had stopped to listen to the entire conversation. All right everyone except me knew, didn't they? Rob you're so dead!! "I asked him to keep quiet, so you wouldn't tell what you thought I wanted to hear."
