the morning after the quarter quell announcement, finnick and lyra woke up to twig jumping about their room. luckily, lyra left to feed the puppy before she noticed finnick was awake, giving him a chance to get his thoughts in order. lyra hadn't said a word about the situation since it happened. he got a quiet 'what?' when the words left the presidents mouth but other than that, all she did was walk into their room and go to bed.

she didn't speak a word until they were about to walk into the reaping together. "finnick?"

"yeah, ly?"

"i love you" she smiled "a lot"

"i love you a lot" he repeated back to her, tightening the grip he had on her hand. unfortunately, they were then torn apart to get logged in and forced to opposite sides of the stage. soon enough, a woman very clearly from the capitol took the stage.

"welcome ladies and gentlemen. as we celebrate the 75th anniversary and third quarter quell of the hunger games. we shall begin with the ladies as we always do..." the capitol woman paused dramatically while pulling out a slip of paper form the glass bowl "the female tribute from district four... annie cresta!"

finnick let out a sigh of relief. he felt terrible, disgusted at himself even. one of his oldest friends had been chosen for the hunger games and he was relived. he should've been outraged, upset, angry. but all he could think about was how happy he was that it wasn't lyra. no matter how selfish it was.

lyra wasn't sure what was happening to be honest. what she did know, was that her friend, her annie, burst into tears at the news. what was she chosen for? she didn't know. she did know that she wouldn't mind doing it if annie was so upset "i- i'll do it!" she yelled over the yells and mutters of protest. the crowd went silent at the words.

"you're volunteering?" the woman questioned.

"i think so?" she replied before making a firm decision "yes, yes i'm volunteering" lyra nodded to herself, proud of her quick decision making skills.

she didn't notice the pitiful looks. the outcries of some. the glances of condolence sent to finnick.

finnick's heart sank. he knew he'd be going back as well. they both could've been okay. maybe finnick wouldn't have been reaped. but now, even if he was, there was no way in hell that he would leave lyra's life in the hands of a stranger. especially one who would be in a constant life or death situation. he couldn't trust that they would protect her over themselves (which they most definitely wouldn't) but he would. so he had to go.

"and now for the men" the woman announced after adjusting lyra's position next to her. "the male tribute from district four..." she rummaged around the bowl. there was no tension in the room amongst the districts people anymore. they all knew finnick would be leaving them with lyra. "rylan fli-"

"-i volunteer as tribute" finnick interrupted, not letting her finish. he strode on the the stage, quick to display his cocky demeanour to the crowds of capitol citizens he knew were watching. it would help them both in the long run and he knew it.

"very well! the tributes from district four, lyra lovelace and finnick odair! so then, all that remains is..." she didn't manage to finish her sentence before peacekeepers stormed the stage, grabbing finnick and lyra while pushing them off and towards the train "well that's rude!"

"what, we can't even say goodbye!?" finnick yelled while lyra went along willingly.

"the plan is straight to the train"
