"Oh my goodness I am so very sorry." I apologize. I get myself up Fromm off the ground and brush off my dress. My eyes travel from a pair of expensive black shoes to a familiar smile.
"Forgive me Elizabeth, it was my fault." His voice just makes me smile. I start to giggle a little and he laughs. "How about we go for a walk?" He holds his arm out for me to take and I snake my arm through it. I've never had special treatment like this. At least not from a man of his social level.
We make our way up the stairs to the first class deck. It was the most beautiful sight I have ever seen. I couldn't help but look around in awe.
"Oh I almost forgot." He opens one side of his jacket up and takes out a notebook. My notebook. "You forgot this last night." He handed it to me and smiled. I take it and smile back.
"Thank you Tobias. I had a heart attack this morning. I thought it was gone for good. Thank you."
"I hope you don't mind, but I read through just about everything." He guides me to the edge of the boat and we look at the ocean and the sky and just everything. It looked even more perfect from up higher.
"What do you prefer, night or day?" I ask him. I see him turn to look at me out of the corner of my eye and I look at him.
"Day time. I like it when it's bright out and the birds are singing. I can see everything happening." He explains.
"I much rather prefer the night. It's more....mysterious. You can be sneaky, you can do things and nobody would ever know, something amazing can happen and only the people that are there can know that it happened. Everything seems more fun at night and the air just seems so different from day time air. Call me crazy, but that's what I think." I look at the blue sky and then close my eyes.
"You're not crazy. I think your opinion is beautiful." I look at him and smile.
"Do you want to meet my friends?" I ask. He nods and starts walking back towards he stairs. I shake my head and grab his hand. I start running to the stairs and dragging him along. He laughed at me, but I knew it wasn't in offense. It was like a child's laughter when they get excited.
We get to where my friends are and as we are walking to them, everyone stares at me and him. Probably because I'm like them and he's just not. I blush at the thought and go to Matilda.
"Ladies, this is Toby Abernathy." I smile and watch him shake their hands.
"It's Tobias actually." He corrects me.
"I like Toby. It suits you rather than the full name Tobias." Hannah says.
"Yeah, you don't look like a Tobias." Lucy chimes in. He just kept smiling and it made me really happy. He made me really happy. Toby and the girls make small talk about different things. Mostly the differences in the classes. I catch him looking at me every now and then.
"Does anybody know what time it is?" I ask. Toby takes out a watch from his pocket.
"Oh goodness, I've been down here for three hours. It's already 2:00pm." I look at him worriedly.
"Is there some place you have to be?" I feel a sadness wash over me. He gets up from his seat and say by to my friends. He takes my hand and walked me on deck.
"I do have to go. I bet my family is worried sick." He says.
"Will I see you again?" I ask him, looking down. He takes a moment before he answers, like he's debating something in his head.
"Would you like to join me for dinner tonight with my family?" I look up at him and smile. His accent rings through my ears and I feel really honored or happy. I don't really know what I'm feeling, it's just a really good feeling. But as soon as it comes, it goes.
"But...but.... I don't know I mean I'm not like you. No one that's rich likes people like me, Toby." I furrow my eyebrows. "They like their own kind. I'm just too..." I trail off, not being able to say the word.
"Different? Poor?" My heart drops when he says it. "Elizabeth, nothing is more poor than having a family of snobs or a boat for that matter. And having a heart of gold and the nicest personality is the best kind of wealth." He smiles at me. He hasn't even known me long and I feel like he knows everything about me. I smile at him and he smiles back.
"Okay, but what will I wear? I can't wear this dress." I complain.
"I think my sister might have something that fits you. Meet me by those stairs," he points to the stairs we came down to get here. "At five o'clock and I'll take you to get a dress." I nod and watch him walk away.
"See you then Elizabeth." He waves and I wave back. My heart flutters as I watch him head up the stairs and disappear.
