When cynical addict Rodion Popov makes a deal with the Devil and wagers his soul, his life takes a turn for the demonically surreal. Thrust into a city of shapeshifting sinners and chaos spirits, he must complete five tasks at the Devil's behest in order to escape the despairing world he lives in.
And the Devil? He just so happens to be hell-bent on making sure Rodion fails.
Thankfully one of the Devil's minions, Shutka, is not. Out of pity, she joins Rodion, serving him as something between companion and counselor. But as the tasks escalate and the strain on his body and mind intensifies, Rodion finds himself seeking an answer to the question at the heart of his deal, a question Shutka can't possibly help him answer: is it possible to redeem a soul?

a new year means a new (old??) map!
i am pleased to present my 2024 open novella contest (onc) entry, "the devil comes to angelovsk," which follows prompt no. 32: a drunk dare and the biggest mistake of your life. a sin you can't erase. after all, blood leaves its traces and so does the taking of a soul. it also contains a little bit of no. 5: horror is in the eye of the beholder. and some of no. 95: i will become as monstrous as i must.
inspired by my return to the major works of dostoyevsky and gogol, "the devil comes to angelovsk" is the deal with devil the story i've been wanting to write for months. the onc is the push i need to get started on it, not to mention my favorite time of year on wattpad.
this is my fourth time participating in the contest and i am so excited to continue with a few of my traditions. the first is posting new chapters to my onc guidebook, "novellas and new roast," which contains many a tip and trick about the onc. i highly recommend checking it out if you haven't already, even if you just skim the section of mini-interviews with past winners.
another tradition is setting my onc entry in a fictional city and or country. those of you who read "novyye saints," my 2021 onc entry, might find the map of angelovsk to be eerily familiar because it's actually gorod krestov sixty-five years later! knowing that, i can't wait to take you back to the very streets mysh and volya heisted on and have you explore a more recent version of the city with my new duo, rodion and shutka.
