( Reader's POV, Sonic's side )

Sonic wandered around the island of Mobius, looking for dangers to fight off to keep himself busy. Eggman hadn't been attacking for months now. Everyone found the silence peaceful and left it to be as it was. Not for Sonic, who was left curious and dumbfounded as he found it strange and knew that it wasn't like eggman to just suddenly retire.

Sonic ran across the beach, watching the ever-growing view of eggman's base structure in the distance from mobius. The long distance from the building made it appear foggy and monochromatic, which is why Sonic decided to take a closer look and was currently running across the calm ocean waves toward the large laboratory. Leaving a long jet of water behind him.

As soon as Sonic arrived, he snuck close so as not to be detected by eggman's security. Sonic looked up at the modern steampunk building, and one thing was already obvious.. Everything was activated and functioning. Security bots were actively roaming around the towering building while mechanical doors opened and closed with each bot entering and exiting the facility. He took a closer look and noticed that every window has a shining light, although casting no moving shadows inside.

The speed demon, of course, found it offsetting and strange. So he zipped by without bashing into any bots and leaned his ear against the wall that was sitting behind a bush so that he could hide. He turned his attention and noticed the garden was freshly cut and organized, but he shook his head to stay focused and curiously placed his ear against the wall once more, trying to listen for Eggman's obnoxiously loud voice.

He was left with nothing. Sonic sighed hopelessly as a good few minutes had passed, and Sonic was only met with the silence of failure. He crossed his arms and began softly muttering to himself in annoyance while kicking a loose pebble that did nothing to him to be treated so poorly whatsoever. "This is pointless. What the hell am I even doing?" He sighed again and was about to leave, when suddenly, the sound of two familiar roaming bots caught his attention.  "Cubot and Orbot....?" He thought to himself as the two voices could be heard speaking back and forth to one another through the thick metal and brick walls. Sonic brightened up as he became hopeful once more.

Sonic snuck closer toward the entrance of Eggman's laboratory. Using a bigger, more stupid, gardening bot to cover his body from the security cameras, Sonic snuck inside through the entrance and dashed toward Eggman's living room, which is apparently also his bedroom. But we don't need to be judging his poor life choices right now, so let's move on.

The blue blur barged through the door, swiftly landing onto his feet, and loudly announced himself.

"Alright, Eggman! Come out and fight, I know you're up to something!"

And.... silence....

Sonic  stood dumbfounded at the broken door. Sonic was having an awkward staring contest with two small tin-can bots playing cards by a lonesome table in the middle of the freshly cleaned laboratory.

"Where's Eggman?" The blue blur asked with a hint of annoyance, clearly unamused while he pulled his brown buff over his peach muzzle.

Cubot and Orbot blankly stared at the overly dramatic hero with a cold, emotionless, once blinking expression before Cubot spoke up.

"Mister Eggman is out on vacation. He's working on a new project with some weapon people." Orbot just stared at his companion in a slight panic.

Sonic raised a brow, leaning on one foot with a gloved paw resting on his waist, staring at the two trash bots in boredome, stupidity, but also a slight amount of curiosity.

"Oh, yea? Eggman's working with people now, huh...? What's this "project" he's been working on?" The young adult asked with sarcasm in his tone and makeshift air quotations before he stepped closer to the bots and joined them on the floor.

Orbot decided to speak up first, not giving his clumsy and clueless companion an opportunity to use his voice box.
"Doctor Eggman wanted to try and use his ingenious in science to something more than just robots, so he had decided to leave and compete with another company to see who could create the best project."

Tha smaller machine explained. Cubot looked at him in confusion, clearly experiencing a lot of 'brain work.' He eventually figured out that Orbot was actually telling the truth....

...In his own way....

Sonic nodded and listened closely while flicking an ear. He kept his head forward while using his eyes to look down at the extra deck of cards with bored and half lidded eyes. He picked up a decent amount to casually join the game...

"mhm~ and what company is he working with, if I may ask?" Sonic asked bluntly, placing a card down. Cubot hummed in thought. He doesn't recall Eggman ordering them not to say regarding who it Is, so he took the spotlight, picking up a card.

"I think it was something called, uh.... 'Gang' or... 'Gum...?" Cubot tried to remember. Sonic only looked bored and very disinterested while very obviously judging the dumbest assistants anyone could have ever asked for which Eggman oh so dearly loves more than him, apparently. Orbot placed down a card and put a gentle mechanical hand on his co-worker's shoulder to help correct and encourage him.

"Gun, or rather, G.U.N... We dont know anything about that company though..." Orbot explained, waiting for Sonic to place down a card

The young adult's eyes widened in surprise and shock while staring off into nothingness once that name struck his ears. He couldn't believe that Eggman had begun working with G.U.N.. the mere thought about the destruction and chaos those two could cause was enough to make Sonic's heart pump with adrenaline. Cubot carefully touched Sonic's sports-taped arm to catch his attention.

Sonic's emerald eyes snapped back into reality and softened once he looked down at the worried bot who was offering a glass of water which he had quickly fetched from Eggman's kitchen. Sonic gently smiled and accepted the offer while giving it a gentle pat. He returned his gaze to Orbot.

Orbot looked up with a plain expression. He knew things were getting serious. So he slowly and carefully placed down his deck of cards and turned his floating body toward the royal blue hedgehog's direction. Sonic spoke up next.

"Do you know where they are? How long has Eggman been working on this 'project?" His tone quiet as he spoke cautiously, placing down the glass of water and his own deck of cards before putting his gloved paws into his crossed legged lap.

"I'm not sure... I might know someone who could help you, but you won't like it... You may know him as well." Orbot explained, fiddling with his mechanical fingers in a nervous laugh. Sonic sighed. Immediately getting irritated by just the thought.....

"Shadow..?"

"Yeah..."

"The annoying black hedgehog that my girl- I mean... Amy keeps mistaking as me?"

"I'm afraid so..."

"Yeah Eggman can do his evil work, im not dealing with him." Sonic stood up and turned around, stepping toward the exit.

Cubot quickly went over to Sonic and pulled onto their brother-like enemy's arm before he was able to leave. He spoke up for both himself and Orbot.

"Please, Sonic! Doctor Eggman hadn't been home for two years and we don't know If he's still alive! Please bring him back!" The yellow bot pleaded, Sonic looked down at him with disinterest before looking back to Orbot who was slowly hovering over with fidding hands and saddened, pleading blue eyes.

Feeling the responsibility sink in, he sighed and lowered his head, hating the decisions he was about to make and knew he'd regret it.... "Alright fine... but if my blood is on Shadow's hands, then it's your robotic heads on my grave. And stop yelling... it's 'annoying~"

The two bots cheered and rushed over to Sonic and jumped toward him, embracing him into a tight, uncomfortable hug.... Sonic grumbled and awkwardly patted their heads. "Alright.... that's enough........ You-.... You can let go now..... Guys....... sigh and I thought I was the drama king...."
