The letter arrived just after midday.
It didn't come with ceremony or warning-just a sharp, sudden beat of wings against the open kitchen window, followed by the soft thud of parchment landing against polished wood.
James looked up first.
He didn't speak. Didn't joke. Didn't even move immediately.
The owl-dark-feathered, unfamiliar-ruffled itself once before taking off again into the bright summer air, vanishing over the garden as quickly as it had come. What it left behind felt heavier than its size suggested.
Estella was seated at the table, one knee pulled up slightly beneath her chair, absently spinning a spoon against the rim of her cup. She watched James cross the room and pick up the letter without hesitation.
That alone told her enough.
Because James Potter hesitated before everything except Quidditch and stupidity.
The parchment was thick, official in a way that felt almost wrong in the warmth of the kitchen. Wax seal pressed clean and deliberate. No handwriting she recognised. No casual tone. Just weight.
James broke the seal.
The sound was quiet, but it changed the room anyway.
His eyes moved across the page once.
Then again, slower.
The spoon in Estella's hand stopped spinning.
"Well?" Sirius called from somewhere behind him, lounging half-upside-down on the sofa like gravity was optional. "If it's a love letter, I want details."
James didn't answer.
That was the first real silence.
Even Sirius noticed it.
Even he stopped smiling.
James lowered the letter slightly, gaze still fixed on it like it might rewrite itself if he looked long enough. His jaw tightened-not in anger, but in something more contained. Something measured. Like he was suddenly aware of the shape of the world beyond the kitchen walls.
Estella set the spoon down properly.
"What is it?" she asked quietly.
James finally looked up.
And there it was-that shift.
Not fear exactly. Not panic. Something steadier. Heavier.
"Dumbledore," he said.
That name didn't need explanation.
The room seemed to narrow around it anyway.
Sirius sat up properly now, feet hitting the floor. "What about him?"
James exhaled once, then held the letter out slightly as if he wasn't sure whether it was real.
"He's forming something."
Remus had appeared in the doorway without anyone noticing him arrive. Typical. Quiet as a shadow, already alert in that way he got when the world stopped being theoretical.
Estella felt her stomach tighten before she even heard the rest.
James continued, voice lower now.
"An Order. Of sorts."
The words landed strangely. Like they didn't belong in a kitchen still warm from breakfast, still carrying the faint smell of tea and jam.
Sirius let out a short laugh-sharp, disbelieving. "An order? That sounds like something out of a storybook."
