Chapter 2: A Talking To

Rex walked through Courasant's cool air. It was early in the morning. Rex didn't normally walk this early, but he needed to clear his head. He was too busy with his own thoughts that he didn't see someone in front of him. Rex landed on the cold sidewalk.

"Well, someone is in the clouds today." said a familiar voice. Rex shook his head.

"Cody? Arhaa, I didn't see you there."

Cody chuckled and helped him up. "It's obvious that you didn't see me. If you did, you wouldn't have been on the ground."

"Oh, right." Rex said. "So" Cody said walking with Rex beside him. "What's on your mind Vode? Or do I really need to ask."

"I have it figured you know?" Rex said looking at him sticking his hands further into his pockets.

"Sure, you've been like this since the war ended." Cody said simply. Rex sighed. "Well, your observational skills haven't dullened I see." Rex said. Cody said nothing. But waited for him to go on.

"I just- it's- really-" Rex sighed again, "complicated." He finished weakly.

"Well, if you ever need to talk, I'm here." Cody said. Rex nodded. Rex decided to change the subject. "So, how's Kathleen and Mille?" Cody's face lit up.  "They're both well. Millie and I have been having some serious bonding time lately." Rex smiled.

"That's nice to hear. I'll have to pop by sometime." Cody went on, "What about you? What's going on at your end?" Rex looked to the sky.

"Echo holomailed me a recent picture of them. He said the other one was outdated."

"Oh? How are they all doin?" Cody added, "It's been a while since I've seen the batch."

"They are all doing well. Omega has grown." Rex replied.

"What are their names again? Geez, I've got to get Echo's holo account to stay up to date." Cody said aloud.

"I'll send it to you." Rex said. "Helena and Hunter, Tech and Phee, Crosshair and Emerie, Wrecker and Lexi, Echo and Tanya." Rex listed.

"Oh, that's right." Cody said. "They must all be happy. Say, does Omega? -"

"Oh no she doesn't!" Rex said with a laugh. "If Hunter has anything to do with it."

"Right." Cody said with a smile.  "I understand that feeling."

" I figured you would." Rex commented. He the then looked too the sky. " I'm not sure when the last time I saw them was." Rex counted on his fingers.

"Last I met Omega she was 13-14 years old. She's 16 now. I'll be seeing them for the ball. Echo told me they were coming."

" Where do they live again? I know they live far." Cody asked.

"Pabu" Rex answered. "It's a nice place. It's a remote location. It's not well known. Most of the people of Pabu are refugees."

"Mmm, sounds like a nice place." Cody said. He then asked. "Say, didn't Echo get a partner first?" Cody asked out of the blue.

"Yeah" He then laughed and recited what Fives had said to him.

"What?! You- how!? I am way better looking and charming in my ways!"

Cody laughed out loud. "Yeah, that sounds about right. He then turned the next corner and came to a building. "Wanna come inside?" Rex shook his head.

"Thanks, but I'll take a pass. It's still morning and I don't want to impose. Like I said, I'll pop by sometime." Cody nodded and walked up the front steps. Rex turned to go.

"Rex!" Cody called after him. Rex turned around. "Remember, if you need anything."

Rex nodded. "I'll keep that in mind. Thanks Codes." Cody smiled and shut the door.

Rex walked back to the 501 Quarters. His mind was still elsewhere. When he came through the door he was met by an exasperated Fives.

"Where have you been?!"

"I went out for a walk why?"

This early? - you know what, never mind that. Skywalker called about a good hour ago. Remember you and him-"

"Blast it!" Rex said scrambling to get his stuff on. "Why didn't you tell me!"

"Because someone left his comm on the counter?" Kix said pointing to the comm on the table.

"Blas- never mind!" He looked at the clock. "10:00! Blast! I'm late!" Without another word Rex rushed out the door.

"Someone woke up in Cloud City today." Hardcase said from the chair. "He's been weird."

"We've all noticed, and we all know the reason behind it." Jesse answered resting his hand on his hips. The rest nodded and grunted in agreement.

Rex ran through the sidewalks he bounced as he stood there waiting for the lift. He ran through the hall and knocked on Anakin's apartment door. Anakin opened it. Before he could say anything, Rex started to explain what made him run late. Anakin held up his hand.

"Easy Captain, I'm not mad. I had a feeling you were going to run late. Don't worry." Rex looked confused. Anakin stepped aside.

"Come on in. It's just me and mister Luksters." He said putting a hand on Luke's shoulder. Rex calmed down a bit.

"Luke" Anakin said looking down at the boy, "can you play on your own for a bit? I need to talk to Rex about something. I'll be real quick." Luke nodded and went back to the living room. Anakin motioned for Rex to follow him to his office. Once they were both inside Anakin shut the door and went started.

"Rex, are you feeling alright?" He had his back turned to Rex. Rex stood there. "Uh yeah, I've been fine."

"I can see otherwise." Anakin said turning around. "You know, why don't you just ask her to the ball? Do you really need help with that." Anakin asked with a serious tone, Rex heard a good amount of teasing in there too.

"N-nn-noo sir!" He spoke.

"Good. Now you best go before I come to my senses."

"But Anakin, what if-"

"Times have changed, for all of us. Perspectives change too." Rex smiled. "Alright." He practically ran out of the room. "I won't let you down!" Rex said excitedly and slammed the door. Luke had a look of confusion on his face.

"Dad, why did Uncle Rex just run past me as if he had to use the refresher?"

"Oh, I just had some very important to tell him. He just needed some help. That was all." Luke looked at his father. "Why are you smiling?"

"Oh, nothing son. Nothing at all Anakin's said smiling.
