Chapter 1: Without You

"All my dreams and all the lights mean
nothing without you"
Without You - Lana Del Rey

Daisy Jade Baird was a gentle soul. Her smile was as contagious as her laughter. While she had many admirers in her lifetime, she had never had one and never will have one as madly in love as Coriolanus.

Just as her sister, Lucy Gray had gotten back from the Capitol they began right where they left off. Singing and dancing together like no time had passed. As if Lucy Gray wasn't almost just sent to her death. Daisy Jade was just a year younger than Lucy Gray so automatically they were very close. The Covey spent all their free time together, playing music or swimming in the lake, they were just always together. The Covey couldn't ever imagine losing their loving sister and star singer, so while Lucy Gray was gone their life was in shambles. Once she had returned it felt as though the peace had been restored.

"Everyone, breakfast is ready!!" Lucy Gray yelled from kitchen. Daisy Jade was drawing a portrait and resting in the morning grass, feeling the wind blow on her skin and the dew collecting on her feet and thighs. She heard the leaves whistling from the breeze and falling to the floor. This had to be her favorite place to be. The most peaceful place to be, until it was interrupted but her younger sister. "Daisy Jade! Breakfast is ready, Lucy Gray said to come eat!" Maude Ivory yelled running toward her. Daisy Jade stood up with her arms out and caught Maude Ivory mid run. She spun her around in laughter and joy. She had missed this while Lucy Gray was gone. Lucy Gray had told them "no matter what happens at the reaping today we keep playing music and living our lives. alright?" They had all agreed on this assuming nothing was going to happen because it never did at the previous reapings. Once Lucy Gray was gone they didn't know how to cope. She was the invisible string that tied all of them together. She kept them cheerful and happy. While Daisy Jade had tried to keep Lucy Gray's joy alive, it was hard when all she wanted to do was cry.

Daisy Jade and Maude Ivory went inside together, holding hands as they frolicked through the grass. They put together their plates and went outside on the porch to enjoy their breakfast with the rest of the family. This was a typical Saturday morning for The Covey.
"So Lucy Gray, is your little boyfriend coming to the show tonight?" Barb Azure snickered. everyone giggled to themselves while Lucy Gray rolled her eyes. "He most definitely is darling, he told me he wouldn't miss it for the world!" Lucy Gray responded with a smile taking the mockery with joy. "He's even bringing some friends!" This news made Daisy Jade smile. While she did enjoy Sejanus' company that's not why she was happy. She had noticed this guy a month ago when they were performing. He had a blonde buzz cut and seemed mesmerized by their songs. While she stood in the back singing she stared at his gorgeous face. She immediately wanted to get to know him inside and out.

When she was finally off stage, he was gone. Absolutely no where to be found. Ever since, Daisy Jade had hoped and prayed he would show up again. Every weekend she scanned the crowd for him. Night after night. Week after week. She started to think she had imagined his presence as a whole. While it was too good to be true that he was looking at her and not Lucy Gray she started to lose hope in finding him at all.

Since Sejanus was bringing friends tonight she really hoped he was one of them. Maybe she would be able to find him before he left and they could talk, get drinks together, learn about eachother's mind and maybe eachother's bodies? She snapped out of her daydreams right when Lucy Gray asked her a question. "Daisy Jade?" she asked. "Yes? Sorry I was in my head again." Daisy Jade replied realizing she hadn't heard anything they had said in the last five minutes. "It's alright I just wanted to make sure you were okay. You've been awfully quiet this morning." Lucy Gray said with a worried tone. "I'm fine. Just thinking about how excited I am for tonight!" Daisy Jade smiled and laughed. The Covey continued to eat and talk while Daisy Jade's mind went right back to her mystery man.

That night The Covey were preparing for another exciting night of music and dancing. Lucy Gray had asked Daisy Jade to go get them some drinks from the bar to, in her words, "clear their pipes." As Daisy Jade was walking to the bar she saw her best friend Iris Adams. Iris and Daisy Jade have been best friends since anyone could remember. Iris was orphaned by her parents at a very young age and was taken in by the manager of the performance bar, Maeley Green.

Maeley was only 19 when she took in Iris, so they were more like sisters than mother and daughter. Maeley had this fiery orange hair that Daisy Jade always loved and admired about her. It was practically unmissable and she was very popular among the guys at the bar. Even though she was constantly asked out on dates by these men she never took them up on their offers. She claimed it was because she didn't have the time but it was truly because she didn't know how Iris would react.

"Hey Daisy! Just your guys regular?" Iris called out to her as she walked up. Iris was the only person who just called her Daisy. "Hey Iris! You know it. Also have you possibly seen a certain somebody at all since last weekend when I asked?" Daisy Jade slyly pleaded for information about the man stuck in her head. "No, I'm sorry, I've been looking for him every night, I mean I even got Maeley to look for him but he hasn't been here since you last saw him." Iris said with a frown as she dried off a glass. "Iris, I'm truly starting to think that I am just crazy. I mean does he even exist?" Daisy Jade complained as she put her head in her hands resting on the bar.

Daisy Jade told Iris the story of how Sejanus is coming to see the show tonight and bringing friends. "Well look at that Daisy! He's probably going to be here tonight! And if he's friends with Sejanus you practically have him wrapped around your finger!" Iris exclaimed with a smile while filling up three glasses with some strong alcoholic drinks. "Let's hope so or I'm giving up on this guy. Thanks though!" Daisy Jade shouted walking to backstage carrying the tray with the drinks. "Anytime!" Iris yelled back.

That night the crowd was absolutely amazing. The place was filled to the brim and fans were cheering louder than ever before. The return of Lucy Gray Baird was making District 12 go insane. Sejanus had the goofiest grin on his face watching his girl sing and dance for practically all of the district. Then while she was strumming the guitar, Daisy Jade saw him. The man she had been searching for. Weeks she had spent looking for him and here he was right in front of her. He was standing next to Sejanus and looking directly at her. Daisy Jade couldn't believe this moment was finally happening. A blush started to rise on her cheeks. She knew she had to get off stage as soon as possible to not lose him again.
