her steps wrang out within the building as she sped down the stairs. nerves quickly caught up to her, stopping her dead in her tracks. what if he was harmful? either way, she would be dead on this island, she reasoned with herself.

she steeled herself towards the door, breathing out a large breath, before turning the handle and walking in. the wind blew again, but she didn't let it affect her again. the man, isaac, snapped his head to the window again. something filled his eyes, but it became unreadable. they were wild, searching her face as she looked at him. he almost looked scared.

the door to the room was covered in a multitude of locks and cleary built of thick, industrial-type metal. a large warning sign was plastered to it, reading, "caution! sensitive project within! no entry!" she blew out a tense breath, testing the locks. they seemed to all be shut tight, but a keycard of sorts would unlock them all. she looked back to the man, who stared at her in curiosity, head slightly tilted as if he was a puppy. determination filled her, wanting to bring him back to this light-filled, happy guy once more.

she pushed her way back through the door, deciding to explore more, in hopes of finding a keycard. a door below the staircase came into sight, built similarly to the ones leading towards the "experiment" rooms. her gut twisted, thinking of what happened to the others in those rooms. were they terminated? taken when this place was evacuated? she leaned towards wanting the latter to be the truth.

a frown found her face as she turned the knob of the door, seemingly not budging. not wanting to take forever, she decided to take the quickest route: brute force. she steadied herself before bringing up her foot, kicking it straight into the doorknob. after a few more kicks, the knob fell away, the door swinging open. she silently cheered inside, a smile taking her face as she peeked her head inside.

to the looks of it, it was a cafeteria of sorts. the set up was similar to a school, having the kitchen be hidden in the back of a room with a line of cases built for food infront. tables were infront of that, a sizeable amount filling the room. on the right were drinks and utensils, which hadn't been restocked in some time. lunches sat out on the tables, stuck in time waiting for their owners to return. a stench filled the stagnant air of the room, one of rotten food and turned drinks.

she stepped slowly around the tables, feeling as if she was in a museum of sorts. her eyes searched the tables, looking for a keycard of sorts. an open lunch box was tipped onto its side, contents spilled out across the tabletop. among the moldy sandwich and rotten fuit sat a keycard. she quickly snatched it before walking out of the door, finally breathing in stench-less stagnant air.

walking back to the boy, she sent a silent prayer that the keycard would open the door. her quiet steps rang in the large room, making her question her future act. was this right? surely he would die if she didn't let him out, and she wasn't about to let him rot in a place like this. she could only imagine the evil, evil tortue he endured here.

she took a deep breath, pulling open the door to the little hallway. he was already staring at the window by the time she walked past it. taking the keycard in her hand, she steadily slid it through the reader, holding her breath. the door beeped, a small light turning green. an unlocking noise sounded, releasing the door. she laughed brightly, turning the knob to the door.

he had turned to the door by the time she peeked her head around the corner of it. his wild eyes scanned her face as he slowly brought his legs to his chest, scooting impossibly closer towards the wall.

"no, no, it's okay! i'm not gonna hurt you, i'm here to help you out of this place, okay?" she said quietly, pushing open the door wider. his chest heaved with rapid breaths, pupils going wide as he whimpered with panic.
