the sun had hidden itself behind the curve of earth, waiting for its moment to return as the moon took its place in the sky. the two below continued their walk away from the building, concern growing as the moon peeked from over the horizon. they hadn't found a place to sleep and with the men hunting them down, she was even nervous to rest her eyes.

isaac only had one focus, and that was his insatiable hunger. it had been weeks since the men had left, losing track of the last meal he had in that tight little room. he missed his life before the tests and experiments, despite not remembering anything of it. he was sure it was better than the life he'd been living for so long, only yearning to return to his home with his people.

even though they tried to erase his memories of life, he remembered the front door of his old home, a big dark red door with a golden knob and plate, with three rectangle windows descending down like stairs, the panes were frosted glass. he held tightly to that memory, the only one he knew was real. some of his old memories seemed fabricated, with a mean lady who was meant to be his mother and an equally awful man who would beat him, supposedly his father. but he knew they weren't real, they just couldn't be the truth of what his life was.

she reached a hand to her eyes, rubbing away her tiredness and pushing on, trying her best to ignore the aching in her thighs and the weariness in her body. her brain was screaming for her to stop walking, to just lay down and sleep, but she knew that they couldn't stop now. she wasn't even sure where they would end up, but it was too risky to stop now.

the night air now had a crisp coolness, nipping at their exposed skin and raising goosebumps all over their bodies. she held back a shiver, clasping her hands to her arms and rubbing them quickly, a sigh escaping her lips. without talking, isaac picked her up quickly, holding her tightly in his arms in a princess-like carry. another sound left her lips, a gasp from shock at his sudden actions. yet she settled in quickly, trying not to succumb to her slowly blinking eyes and her weary limbs. her body relaxed in his grip, peering up slightly at his focus far ahead, and realized she was safe, finally letting the blackness of the night pull her into her dreams.

-

her eyes opened slowly, blinking back the previous sleep. the sun had begun to rise over the horizon, the sky a muted shade of blue except for around the sun, which had become painted in a starburst of colors. a small fire had been started infront of her, giving her unending warmth, along with the overwhelming smell of cooking meat. it was a homey feeling to wake up to, other than her aching back from sleeping on the ground almost all night. her stomach quickly growled, a beast within her announcing how starving she was. moving to sit up, she noticed isaac sitting casually across from her, on the other side of the fire. he glanced up quickly from the meat held over the fire, and let his gaze linger on her, focused on the features of her face.

"did you kill something?" was the first words to leave her mouth, only stating the obivious in her sleep-rattled state of mind. she shut her eyes and shook her head, knocking herself awake, before looking back up. "how did you start a fire?" she asked, shifting her eyes up to look at him.

"remembered." was all he said, pratically a grunt in response. she huffed, a small smile creeping onto her lips at his bluntness.

he continued spinning the meat over the fire, watching as the skin charred from the heat. the smell only made her hungrier, causing a sharp growl to leave her stomach once more. she gripped it tightly, trying to keep quiet, a trick she had learned in school. after a bit, he shoved the stick in her direction, to which she grabbed it, glancing at his face which reflected the colors from the fire, creating a suttle warmth to his stoic features. she only replied with a sharp "thanks" in response, looking away just as quickly as she had spoken.

after bringing the meat to her lips, she hesitated slightly, not even knowing what animal this meat had come from on the island. but she didn't wait long before tearing into her first bite, and the next ones after. surprisingly, it was tender and soft, falling easily apart in bites. each bite had tasted different, like all the meats she had tried rolled into one piece. it wasn't long before the stick was empty, to which she returned to the man infront of her, who just tossed the stick to the side.

"so, we should probably build a shelter here. y'know, set up camp." she said, standing after the nice meal, slightly stretching out her legs. "i say we get some logs or sticks and build a teepee shape around a tree." he only nodded before standing up and starting to walk away. she stood there for a second before realizing what he was doing and running over, grabbing his shirt to stop him.

"where are you going?" she said, eyebrows furrowed deeply as she looked up at him. he stayed completely silent, only staring down at her. "isaac talk to me, please." she said, pratically begging him, her voice dripping with the pleas.

"finding materials." he said bluntly before turning to walk away again, to which she pulled on him again to stop him, a small huff leaving her lips, her eyes filled with something unreadable.

"don't go far, okay?" she said almost above a whisper, a faint smile turning up on her lips as her brows tilted up slightly. he nodded as her hand dropped from the fabric, a small wrinkle left in his shirt, and began watching him walk off.

she shook the nervous feeling off, literally, deciding to start on the hut, their shelter. looking around, she spotted large logs and branches, to which she dragged over to her selected tree, standing them up at an angle. many times during the process she crawled in, making sure the area was wide enough in the back for both of them.

after find some little branches to go across, she created a mud slurry, pasting it along the logs to hold the small sticks to. she repeated this all over, feelimg herself getting sleepier and hungrier as she worked. then she went in with the mud, filling in the gaps between the sticks and logs, working it in with her hands. but as the minutes ticked by and isaac still hadn't returned, her worry grew and her heart began racing. her gut was telling her something was wrong, and she didn't like the thought of that.

standing back from her shelter, gazing at the work and wiping away the sweat with the back of her hand, she realized it missed a vital part in the wilderness; camouflage. she began walking around the area, collecting leaves and branches for around the shelter and ignoring her worries about isaac. she continued stepping around, careful to not go too far from the base, but her worries heightened when she heard the voices. they were from many men, yelling and screaming at something; or maybe even someone.

without thinking, she sprinted toward the noise, dropping all she had collected. her heart shook in her chest, feeling red hot all over her body as she faced the men infront of her, still unaware of her. her brain haywired as she watched them drag isaac away, feeling her breathe rapidly as her thoughts scattered. she was still a good eighty yards away from them, but her heart shattered in her chest. she knew she wouldn't be able to take them down, not even one. she wasn't a fighter, nor was she violent in any sense, and she didn't have the strength to be able to either. her feet had become stuck to the ground, her entire body non-moving as they carried away the man she wanted to protect with every odd stacked against her.

without thinking, she started to scream, letting the noise rip through her like a final breath. they were animalistic in nature, ones of pure pain and anguish, noises she had never heard herself make. dropping to her knees, she began screaming somehow louder, hitting and punching the ground like a madwoman. if they were going to take him, her safety net, then they were going to take her, too.

she didn't hear the sound of multiple sets of barreling footsteps towards her from her cries, let alone feel the men pull her up and away. she only screamed worse when she felt the cold metal of a needle puncture her skin, releasing a cool liquid into her veins, shocking her back into real life, flooded by her senses. she began fighting back against the burly men, screaming for them to let her go, but they only held on tighter, leaving marks on her skin with their strength.

her fights and screams contiued, even as the fatigue started to wear in, lasting till the last moment, wanting her struggle to be known. she breathed out, hissing through the pain, "this will never be over," to the eerily silent men who only stared her down as her world faded to black.
